Oneill and Rip Curl. They are the only companies actually spending money on materials research and when they find something good they lock it up for 2 or 3 years. They are both wetsuit companies that make clothing, not the other way around.
There are others here and there, like Patagonia were supposed to be good, Boz in California, Hotline in California, etc.

I've seen them for a lot cheaper than that. And Seventh Wave does essentially the same thing, custom suits with Yamamoto rubber and their top of the range is NZD$799. They've also got a suit that'd be perfect for SUP (I would've thought), the 1.5mm steamer. You could also choose custom panel thicknesses and get e.g. thicker legs since you don't need the flexibility as much and thinner shoulders or whatever.
