lets keep this to what's wrong or right.

to many times good threads or topics end up being a mud slinging contest.

Oh dear, it seems to me that you lads have lost your way.
When was paddling/ surfing ever about winning or prizes or who was the best.
When you stop thinking that way you may get your answers.

No ones referring to 'winning prizes' here, at the end of the day its about the fun factor. I went to last years Nats on the Goldy (my 3rd), took my young bloke. We go to these comps for a 'boy's weekend as much as anything and so like to free surf as well. We got 3 days of howling freaking Nor Easterlies and 1 foot slop - just not much fun competing and nothing to do in between. Everyone knows this is typical conditions Oct/Nov on the Goldy - this year actually looked good by comparison.

Port Macquarie (3 previous Nats venue) in August, different story. More swell, stacks of options wind wise and no crowds. Hell we even had a smoking Down Winder for the race!

For the cost, time training, etc the Goldy venue/time of year is not an option for me. It seems as though the priority for Surfing Aust is racing and as a result the surfing side will suffer. Most guys into competitive SUP seem to favour the racing side so perhaps they are correct in their thinking.

Goaty, I take your points but none of these responses sound particularly fun to me, there seems to be general malaise about the state of the competitive scene.
If people wish to compete and vie for superiority good on them, go hard and do your best. Power to you. But unless you are prepared to take a problem by the balls and fix it up yourself you can't complain about it. Not meaning anyone in particular here.
My point is that surfing/ paddling is a pastime that can be very satisfying from a personal point of view.
Enjoyment doesn't always translate to winning.

Not sure what you mean ET by "none of these responses sound fun" but thats cool. What do you mean by "people wish to compete and vie for superiority"? Competing is a bad thing?

And how do you suppose people "take a problem by the balls and fix it up yourself"? Become the CEO of surfing Australia perhaps?

On second thought your post makes no sense whatsoever IMO.

"Enjoyment doesn't always translate to winning." Well I don't compete in SUP anymore and I am still having a lovely time, albeit on a short board.

Why would anyone invest the cash to travel and surf this dribble?

The same people who go every year? Admittedly another serious barrier to entry for fresh meat?

Shane the old meat is slowly rotting away and the fresh meat is way gun-shy SUP will run out of issues and competitors about the same time oh and grants too!

I would like to do the old meat thing myself. In all honesty, SUP comps are still fairly fresh and no where as intimidating as having a go at Surfing NSW run longboard comps. Still, after you cop a few bad experiences trying to break the ice getting back into these things, it can really turn you off all competition particularly where your interests are governed by the same ruling body and certain dominating individuals.

Oh, thanks to the SPSC team for running great club comps. Does remind me it can be FUN competing.
