depends on a range of factors including board shape width rocker, etc and on surfers skill. A very general formula is between 1.7 to 2 to 1 volume for a beginner. about 1.5 to 1 for intermediatte and maybe as low as 1.2 to one for advanced surfers. At 106 kg my smallest board has 148 litres volume and thats relatively comfortable. its aso 31.5 inches wide which helps heaps to.

I dont think that theroy is correct.
Im 72kgs and ride a 123L by 29 wide and find this board perfect for me and what I want.
(Have a windsurf board at 71L and would have zero chance of SUPing it. Its 22 wide and 4.3 thick.)
Someone weighing 120kgs I reckon would struggle paddling my board. Its not if it is possible or not. Its just not gonna work.
SUP surfing is all about getting onto waves by standing on top of a board and powering with a paddle. Glide is the key. Correct? If you are too heavy for the board you will sink the board and start pushing water and more than likely fall in.
Its not a calculation as such. Its the board shape and rider ability. Thats what gets you onto the wave.
We are all different

I think we're probably riding the same model. Mine is the brushed carbon version of it.
6'3", 108 kgs. Paddling is a nightmare in rip currents or strong winds, but on the wave is pure magic. I'm riding it with the PC-5 side fins and PC-3 central fin...
12 o'clock backhand reos in 1 meter waves became a reality and as soon as I loose 8-10 kgs will be perfect.
My best mate is 6'1 and 95kgs and he's riding the 8'0 and it is surreal how fast he can move the board around.

if I were 20 kgs lighter I'd get a 7'7".

Hey John,

I'm exactly the same height & weight as you & been contemplating an 8'5" Pro 2011 or 2012. Would only use it in fairly clean conditions. You dont have any flotation issues or problems pearling on yours?

Sorry John. I lied. I'm only 100kg... Still close enough. Also read somewhere that you've ridden the 2012 9'0" Hokua.... How does that compare to the Starby for blokes our size?

Cheers for the feedback!. Being 97kgs and 6.2 myself and 'tempted' with the purchase of a SUP. More of a wave board person, having ridden SB and mini Mal previously.

this is sort of a rough guide, as a beginner i would not go double the volume to my weight, it is more the design of the board, with boards like the widepoint/mana that are short and stable it is also unnecessary to start on 12 footers like many people once did, it is just a guide most people will also never go as low as 1.2xvolume where some will go lower, it's all about finding something you like
