I'm all for chat in the carpark or on the beach before/after a surf, but I'm aggressive and selfish in the water. It's a war zone out there.

That's just sad. A war zone? Seriously?

Seriously? Is that what you really think? You guys are out there playing toy soldiers? I'm not crying dude, these are tears of hysterical laughter.

Just for the record, Legions attitude towards surfing is his own. It is not representative of many if any shortboarders that I know, even here on the crowd infested Gold Coast.

I have ridden shortboards since 11y.o, still do. (No neck or back problems) I ride SUP as well. In the 3 or 4 years I have ridden SUP I have had one single drama with another surfer. He was a self proclaimed legend surfboard shaper and the real motivation for his aggro was that I refused to recognise his legend status in business dealings at an earlier time. So that's pretty much none. Saying that I approach a line up the same as I would on my shortboard and follow the same rules on either as learnt by way of back hander as a grommet.

But, I try to approach life as a considerate person, I fail from time to time and have changed my mind about people that may have left them thinking otherwise of me but I try my best and to treat my surfing the same way I live my life. I think we all mostly do the same.

These topics are quite silly really aren't they.

Its not what I personally think, I generally dont surf with crowds and when I do its not for long. I surfed Snapper for an hour caught two waves, one was good the other average. There would have been 200+ people out there and half were pros the other half locals.

Well yeah, I guess it would really want to be. Because Legion's self-proclaimed "aggressive and selfish in the water" attitude does not seem to be consistent with the surf etiquette notion that is most often raised in relation to thoughtless SUP surfers. It all seems a bit hypocritical to slag ignorant SUPpers if short boarders do the exact same thing deliberately and arrogantly, not out of ignorance. So in that sense, it's lucky Legion is unique and unrepresentative of shortboarders generally.

A few reasons why I took up SUP surfing are for exactly those reasons Legion and Doggie are talking about here. Crowded lineups and agro competitive packs make me cringe and living on the Gold Coast if you want to ride a shortboard exclusively this is about all you can expect if you want to surf descent waves. With a business, mortgage and a couple of kids I can't be stuffed with BS in the water any more and just want to have fun surfing almost any time I have chance rather than driving around from spot to spot and more times than not eventually driving home without getting wet. This keeps me fit so on the days I have time to slip down the coast to escape the crowds I'm not huffing and puffing to catch a wave and hopefully surf it well enough to give me a little bit of the stoke I remember as a grommet. Maybe you guys should "come out of the closet" so to speak and give it a go. Hopefully it might add something to your surfing that looks to be missing

Legion

A set comes through. You're out of position but some random stranger gets the first wave, best/biggest of the day. Another stranger picks off the next. You get the third and it fizzles in comparison to their waves. As you get closed out on or the wave fades, you see them way down the line still riding. Are you stoked for them?

Yeah I would be....plus I'd even say to them after they paddled back out "nice wave". We always do multi hour sessions and the first thing I do when I paddle out is say G'Day and let people know I'm nothing like Legion and I'm here to enjoy myself...But if I do come across someone like Legion who continually beats his chest in my face I can very quickly become another person one that doesn't paddle away..it's takes an arsehole to bring out the arsehole in me.

Legion you should try a new attitude you might meet a lot nicer people.

Yes they are, but they do bring up the + - of the sport I guess.

In my opinion they all have there place in the water. I had a go on a longboard for the first time while I was in QLD and it was great fun in the small waves that I used it on. Gotta say the SUP was bloody hard and didnt think much of it at all. Did catch a couple of waves and enjoyed the glide even when the wave was ankle high but would rather a 8ft mal than a SUP.

So you like it, huh? You might say it satisfies you? And you might rephrase "satisfies you" as "increases your self-satisfaction"?

I dunno Woody. I have known Dallash above for a good while and his post kind of reminded me of why I started SUP as well. To surf when you could and to get away from assholes. Being an asshole isnt about being a shortboarder though, there's just as many around here on SUP now as well and these guys piss me off more than most. But Crikey there are some turkeys around here. As another shortboarder mate that rides SUP now pointed out they all seem to mysteriously dissapear when the surf gets any size at all.

No chest beating. If you notice me in the water I'm doing it wrong. It's easy to spot the flapping groms with the big mouths. Swift, quiet and subtle is the way.

This "us vs them" attitude some people have baffles me a bit. To me it's all surfing. You may not be able to rip on a SUP like a pro on the WCT but that's not what it's about for me. It's about challenging myself and looking at conditions that are marginal at best and coming in from a three hour surf with a smile on my dial. I want to be fit enough when my young blokes in his teens to take him on that boat trip to the Mentawaiis I've promised him.

You will have to make sure you don't break any bones this time D.

I agree, I don't get the attitude either. But in saying that it has always been there. I started Wavesailing on the Goldy when I was 13yo, and was very much in a minority. The attitude was there back then, with only half the crowd.

But by and large most crew are happy with what ever and just get a buz being out on the water, it's only a few that sour the experience. Like I have said to a few in the line up, no matter what you are riding, or the conditions you are getting, it's always better than mowing the lawn.

Bloody wind w@#$%^s I wouldn't imagine there was too much animosity out there towards you guys. It's usually blown out by the time you're hitting the water. There won't be a ripstick or any other bone breaking kids toys in sight next time I book a surf trip
