I'm going to Lord Howe next week. I heard there is surf over there. Has anyone been? Any tips on where to find a wave?

Dave - I've been twice in fact but not for lots of years. Keen to get back its a magic place.

There is definatly surf generally on one side or the other, not sure about outside the reef. How are you going to get your board over there, the planes are teeny weeny my mate flys them for Qantas albeit last time i went it was only a 9 seater!

Keen to find out what you can research!

Thanks for the info and pms. Sounds like a lotta fun over there.
Greg, there have a few JPs for hire over there. Definitely not hot doggers but beggars can't be...

I spent a week there in February.

I took my 6' 8" surfboard on the Qantas link flight as part of my 14Kg luggage limit. (you can't pay for more due to weight limits)
This means taking your SUP is out of the question except perhaps a short SB carbon.

There is good surf on both coasts.
On the East we surfed at Blinky beach which you can ride you bike to. Nice beach break with some rock bottom.

On the West Coast with South swell you need to rent one of the Kayaks from the dive shops and tow your board about 1Km to the outer reef then anchor the Kayak inside.
There are three or four good waves ranging from a friendly left straight out to a barrelling wave over to the right near the ship channel. (locals will be there)

We had the place to ourselves, sitting in the line up looking back at Mt Lidgbird is better than Tahiti.

No mobile phones, No TV, ride everywhere in 10mins......relax and enjoy.

Expensive but worth it.

There are some epic waves at lord howe. We have had it as good as our info trips. Make shore you spend some time on the outer reef. There are 3 lefts and a right that are unbelievable. One of the lefts you can surf on low tide which is needed because it will go dry on the other reefs.

Have fun over there. Hope you get some swell.

I was going to to Lord Howe island in 1983 with two mates but I was $1000 Dollars short they went for two weeks it coast them $2000 Dollars each Lord Howe is not cheap but has some great waves there's a right hander there that breaks like Sunset Beach in Hawaii, and only push bike hire no cars. But remember Lord Howe is very sharkie so always be aware plus fishing on Lord Howe is just GOLD

Man, very jealous Kissa. That place is sooo cool.

Try the left hand reefs off Lover's Bay (not too far from the shore) or the ones around the main channel out from the Jetty if you're feeling adventurous and want some more power. There is an awesome right hand pointbreak/reef set up at Middle Beach but it needs a lot of swell. Ned's Beach has a similar one but needs even more swell. Blinky Beach has a rock shelf off the sand that can get good in the right wind.

Cruising on a SUP around Ned's Beach and The Gulch would be epic.
