40 years a surfer and lots of windsurfing At Long Reef Sydney jumping waves. Now in the windy Coral Sea between Cairns and Townsville. Surf gets up to 2'' with a period of 3-4 seconds. Got surf skis and they don't do it for me. So time to give SUPping a go.

Where to start board wise? I might be a SUP beginner but don't want to buy some great barge for the first hour of practice. Looking for something that will handle a bit of chop but still get new going when it us dead flat. I weigh in at 80 kgs.

Any suggestions from you experts out there. Sorry if this question has been asked many times but my search of the forum hasn't come up with an answer.

A 10 ft + longboard style sup should see you having a blast all the brands do a good 10fter (no pimping) ha...

Or maybe a 12'6 just in case u need to paddle ya butt off away from a croc

The Naish 10'6" Nalu would be a good choice.. or something similar in other brands.

hey mate,

we have been catching some good waves at Saunders, Alva Beach and Florence on Maggie with 9 foot sups.
Depending on your weight anything between 8'10 and 9'10 is spot on.

let us know if you keen to catch up for a ride

cheers

Thanks for the advice (crocs are not the issue ... box jellyfish, irikanji, stingrays, sharks, stone fish, etc are far worse).

There is a supplier in Townsville that stocks Vanhunks Induna which has similar specs to the Naish. I will investigate.
