Who called it SUPing?
If you use a board in the surf its called surfing.
If you use a sail on a board it's called Windsurfing.
If you kite with a board it's called Kitesurfing.
Surely using a paddle with a board should be called Paddlesurfing.

If you tell anyone you have just been SUPing they have no idea what you're talking about! You then have to spend 5 minutes explaining what you do.

The full name "Stand up Paddle Surfing" is just too long, that's why we abbreviate it.
But "SUP" sucks. (imo)
Any other suggestions?

Yeah I kinda agree.
SUP means stand up paddle(ing) But if you SUP in waves it would be SUPS for stand up paddle surfing.
I guess it was said as stand up paddle surfing originally and to not get surfing and paddle surfing mixed up it was called SUP surfing for short.
To me SUP sounds too yo yo home boy.
But I guess its the term used now and its here to stay.
There was a thread about it a while ago.
Also do you pronounce it S.U.P as single letters like A.T.M or do you say it as a word? I say it as a word. eg Did you go for a sup this morning.
But I do think that paddle surf(ing) would be a more bettera

It will be interesting to see what name sticks...No one seems to like S.U.P.

It is a hassle explaining to people what sup is..btw..I say S.U.P. not sup..as in hey..waas-sup!..

PSH makes the latest-greatest SUP boards (imo) and PSH stands for Paddle Surf Hawaii...and they call it Paddlesurfing.

I like Paddlesurfing...My only problem with that is that it's done on rivers and lakes and it seems a little dumb having the word surfing in there..but it's no big deal.

I like paddlesurfing better than paddleboarding....Apparently most the guys in Hawaii just call it 'Stand Up'...That's also a little weird imo..

Saying that you do Stand-Up makes you sound like you're a comedian..

My freinds and I always just say "you wana meat for a paddle this morning" or "had a sic paddle sesh in the waves today"

this works both for flat water and surf.

So for me I like just calling it "Paddling" weather you in or out of the surf,

I too do not like the name "SUP"

Cheers

Personally, I don't like the word SUP, so I am going to refer to the sport from now on as Paddlesurfing. I think if enough people do this then eventually manufacturers and retailers will get the hint and the market will make the change.

In my case it's a bit hard to call it paddlesurfing due to the fact i live about 3

hours from the surf, i usually refer to it as paddleboarding because straight away

people around here say "but theres no surf". I too don't like the name SUP but

because it's so new still i have to explain that you stand up and paddle.

Yeah I don't really like SUP either. Paddle boarding or paddle surfing sounds better to me but I think SUP is here to stay. I just tell people I'm planning to go to Italy and am training to get a job as a gondolier.

Its like saying you kitesurf at Pinnaroo or Peli Point.
I think the word kiteboarding would be more suited.
To me paddleboarding or paddlesurfing would be the most correct.
Stand up to me is usually refered to a surfer against a boogie boarder.
So stand up too can be abit confusing.
Currently I use the words 'going for a surf' for regular surfing or 'going for a SUP' for stand up paddle surfing. If theres no waves I refer to it as 'going for a paddle'.
Which brings me back to using the words 'paddlesurfing' or 'paddleboarding' or 'paddle'
