This morning I got the day off work and headed out to Pines for a dawn session. As I passed Balnarring I saw what I thought was a cat on the side of the road. I slowed down and it turned out to be a big fat Koala who was looking at me. As I passed I looked in my rear vision mirror and I saw it crossing the road - he/she was waiting for me to pass.

I got down to Pines at 6:40am quite a few breezers were already in the water or getting in their wetsuits. Clear sky, waist to chest high waves and 5knott off shore wind - perfect.

Caught a couple of waves at Pines, while waiting for DJ to finish photographing his new mana and said that I wanted to go down to the next break, which is about 1km south from Pines as there were too many sup boarders there - hehe. There were probably only about 5 in the water.

I got to the next break and saw one other sup boarder and two longboarders at the next break. DJ and Cam were paddling up to where I was and by the time they got there the other sup boarder had called it a day.

All of us enjoyed a few waves and were probably surfing about 50-100 meters from the two long boarders who were positioned at another breaking point - no stess. After DJ and I caught a big party wave almost all the way into shore we paddled back out and passed one of them. DJ said to him as we passed "great morning" to which he responded "It was great until you guys got here, and if you get any closer I'll shove that paddle up your arse..." The abuse continued on for a minute or so - I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

After that we just went back to where we were, some time passed and the nasty guy and his mate made the 1km walk back to Pines - I just can't help wondering how unnecessary that incident was.

Hey Oliver, were you at zappers?if so there is a pr!ck who surfs there who thinks its his personal beach.I was surfing there not on a sup and had a very agro shouting match, for the interstaters, this involves quite a long walk to get there,so there are very few surfers in the water.I have surfed there for years, and a crowd would be 6-8 surfers.Go figure some people

It could be, 1km south of Pines - below Daryl Sommers house. Sounds like him. I think a lot of us do this recreation/activity to forget the crap that happens around us on daily basis for a few hours each day/week.

For me.... getting out in the surf or in the bush helps me to figure out where I fit in in to this unusual planet. I love the feeling I get in the surf or the bush, and because of that I always make a real effort to get far away from others to get my thoughts clear.

The crap that happened today, has somehow managed to really cut me to the core - it was so unexpected. I think I'll have to watch Morning of the Earth again to get me over it and just fast forward the bits featuring Terry Fitzgerald

I have found that most of the time it is not the SUPer's who are doing anything to upset the others in the water.

It is just that "some" other surfers in the water get annoyed because they cannot come to the realisation that in the last hour the SUPer caught 20 waves and the angry guy caught 1.

And those 20 waves were in a spot where no one can usually get a wave and there is no one there to compete with for those usually nonexsistant waves. So you see the angry guy's tiny peanut brain is really just overwelmed with these thoughts and the only logical outcome for him is to shout at DJ.

share the stoke

I think this problem is just as bad in the kitesurfing world. I can believe how many kiters tell a new guy or young person to bugger off.

It not only upsets everyone but it makes the person feel demoralised.

I often take 10min out to guve a hand to someone, if its just to have a yarn or get in the water and give a quick tip or 10 in somes cases.

I have had riders quit kiteboarding and i have seen them months latter with there heads low.

I take these people out myself and one of these guys is a verry good rider now living in oz.

Before i forced him back out in the water and befriended him he gave up on water sports etc, I asked why and his reply was he keept getting told to piss off and the agro was hard.

Now this guy is a team rider and passes the stoke on to others.

There is a tip here somwhere im sure

P.S Opps i forgot to use spell check

Understand how that could really get to you Oliver, it's really hard to shake off crap like that.

The guy must be really tough or really stupid - imagine threatening someone 6'4" standing up holding 8 feet of carbon "weapon" in their hand.

It's ironic that what is happening with sup is the same thing that happened to longboarders in the "longboard resurgence", only now the longboarders seem to be dishing out the abuse. Unfortunately these type of incidents are going to increase as sup gets more popular. Anyone who spends time on the Standup Zone or at Swaylocks will know friction between sups and crawlers has become a huge problem in the more crowded areas of the States. I personally haven't had any of these incidents in the 8 or so months I have been riding sups, but this summer on the Gold Coast and SEQld/Northern NSW could be interesting.

The cranky old longboarder is everywhere. The 10:! wave count ratio must drive them nuts.
They have to be told to suck it up and get over themselves.
That form of lowlife is a dying breed I reckon.
I remember speaking with Bill Foote on Maui a few months back; a well respected shaper of all board disciplines he said he doesn't even bother shaping them anymore....there is just no demand.

I see these types of people every day at work on the road/train to and from work, on the streets late at night when I'm partying. I know they exist everywhere, and no matter how much I try to get away from them I even see them in surf breaks at 7:30am on perfect days 1km away from the nearest access - it's just crap, it hurts and I just don't get it.

Sorry guys, just having a bit of a public whine about a minor incident. All up I had an excellent day with my friends.

Hey Oliver,
No point in rising to it, just smile, wink at him and say "I have lube in the van, see you in the car park later sweetie & I'll bring the paddle" you'll then see just how fast a prone surfer can leave a line up or you may make a new friend for life -

Sorry I didn't make it down there Oliver. Been the busiest week of the year for me but it's over now. I tried to get up but
couldn't do it. I should have time to get in the water a bit more from now on in the mornings.

Those agro guys can usually be picked in the line-up just by the looks you get. I always try make eye contact to get a
read on them. If I sense agro I just stay out of there way and don't get close enough to let them have a go, get my fair share
of waves and bail. If they forget you were there I rekon they will get used to having us in the water. Another option is to paddle
prone a bit so they remember it's not that different to regular surfing and they might also click that you may prone surf as well.

If someone has a go at me I usually just say "no worries mate, I used to surf but this is way more fun!" If they have another go I pretend they aren't there.

Thomo, its funny you should make that comment.Today i was riding my sup at a break were im reasonably well known, and b4 most of the locals got in i was given the treatment you know sheep dogged out of the wave either by drop in or paddled in front off when they paddled out,so i couldnt drop down the face without killing myself or some other poor bastard.I have to say i was given equal treatment by both long and short boarders. As soon as the locals arrived and said hi,and how's the sup thing going, and next week im picking up my new sup its a laird did i make a good choice etc.All of a sudden the seas parted and i got called into so many waves i started to feel weird and dare i say it a little greedy.I said something similar as to your point to one of the locals,ie when i stopped riding my fish and short boards and started riding l/boards everyone used to give it to me,that was 15 years ago and so it starts again. But you know i didnt give a sh!t then and i dont give a sh!t now, because im just having FUN Oliver, every one says dont worry about today just forget about it ,but every one knows that knawing and upsetting feeling is just not easy to put aside, and life has a way of pushing this sh!t your way when you have other crap falling on you so,tommorow it will be less upsetting and the day after, less again. Just keep supping

An episode like that can ruin your surf, especially if you are SUPing by yourself. It has only happened to me when I'm
alone and it sucks! But I have learnt from it and found ways to not let it happen like be stoked for other guys that
get waves, let some set waves go, sit on the board now and then etc. We all know the deal but unfortunately Oliver it
wouldn't matter what you did to this turkey he still would of been a grumpy bar$tard.

I guess if you avoid interaction and they are a good bloke they will leave thinking you were a tosser. Can't win.

He was a grumpy old bastard.. a very grumpy old bastard with a very foul mouth.

It was just him and one other guy out there.. and the three of us.. There were waves going by unriden all the time and there was never a time that anyone else went for a wave that he was going for (or on) and I just paddled over to him to say hi and what a great day that it is.

After he said that he wants us to leave (in his own coluorful language) I said.. So.. You want this place totally to yourself and he said yes.. Because he's a local.

I said we would not get in his way and keep away from him but that was not good enough.. He kept going on about it and what he would do with our paddles if we came anywhere near him.. I was tempted to say lets try it up your arse first to see how you like it.. But I just paddled away from him instead and made the most of a great day.

Unfortunately at the Pines and it's surrounds there are a quite few old kn_b head old t_ols who think that they own Westernport Bay. Narrow minded Spawn of Mornington Pig farmers! They're always out with their grumpy old fart faces on, talking about how good it was yesterday - 2 foot and barelling yeee - haaaa! Wave hogging snake morons.

When you come across idiot_ ike this best bet is to paddle away and lead them to their mediocre lives. No doubt even their wives hate em!
