No matter what you do or where you are you will always find there is someone unkind or just downright nasty.

Unfortunately this site is not immune either.

However, yesterday down on the west coast my faith in humanity was restored by two of the nicest individuals who demonstrated the true meaning of stoke. Neither of them were SUPers but actively encouraged me to join them and have....dare I say it...FUN.

What really got me thinking was that they have had encounters with a regular breezer who apparently does not embrace the etiquette responsible SUPers are trying to promote. Their response...."we don't care we're having fun anyway and we're not going to let his behaviour bother us".

Just ignore the imbeciles Oliver, be happy

Ronnie, Ian, Rich, Kristi, Dean, Adam and I had an awesome morning at Damiens today.

When I paddle back out and chatted to Ian he told me that he had been vibed by a couple of longboarders. I found that interesting as I have never experienced it before in that particular location.

Its always been a great vibe and as far as I am aware it hasnt happened to anyone else I know there

A few weeks ago I had a surfer fire up and give Kristiana (13) a hard time.

He wont ever do that again I assure you.

I use the biblical philosphy do un to others.

On ya Phill, to verbal a young girl like that is not on. I had a "where's ya ****ing sail" when I first went out at Damiens (?)on a cut down windsurfer . I was such a kook I didn't realize I was being sledged. I laughed and told him I didn't use the sail because it was a paddle board. after that it seemed ok . The ones that get me now a people that sort of fade in front of you as you try to take off. I must seem a bit dim but I didn't realize they were doing this on purpose, I had no idea people could get like that when they surf.

He was a grumpy old bastard.. a very grumpy old bastard with a very foul mouth.

It was just him and one other guy out there.. and the three of us.. There were waves going by unriden all the time and there was never a time that anyone else went for a wave that he was going for (or on) and I just paddled over to him to say hi and what a great day that it is.

After he said that he wants us to leave (in his own coluorful language) I said.. So.. You want this place totally to yourself and he said yes.. Because he's a local.

I said we would not get in his way and keep away from him but that was not good enough.. He kept going on about it and what he would do with our paddles if we came anywhere near him.. I was tempted to say lets try it up your arse first to see how you like it.. But I just paddled away from him instead and made the most of a great day.

Thinking more about this and how mellow and nice you would have been in the water dj, im thinking this clown should have been called out and said something back "well I reckon you should go in cause your a kook and cant surf"

Im tipping I would not have been able to keep my mouth shut if he was pulling this caper whilst I was out, some fools really do need to put back in there box.

Also agree with Brendan though about keeping it cool by paddeling back out, makes them know your still a surfer

Cammo got a bit of lip at that spot the day we were out. Nothing over the top though.
It's funny there, the couple times I have been there on SUP or regular surfing the guys that are locals go out of the way to
tell each other how good it was the other day or the last time they were out etc when they know you can hear them.

It was great to catch up with you guys and gals this morning at Damiens / Urquharts

Yeah Phill, it was a bit dissapointing to have a couple of smart arse shooting the breeze when it was pretty obvious we were enjoying ourselves.
I might ask Brooko for a few if his don't mess with me pills

I had a crack at PRK after I left you guys for a hour. Really topped off a great day

spot on BP, hehehehe.
Much the same down my way.

Not coming from a surfing background I thought surfers had it in for SUP's but apparently this has been going on for years in the surfing community.

Why paddle away??? Now he has the break to himself and will be twice as bad the next time a SUPer paddles out! Tell him to shelve it or you will do it for him. FUN or not, no need to take S*%t from clowns. You have as much right to be there as he does. If this was the deal we would get no waves on the Goldie.

Totaly aggree.
And further, the guy took a risk mouthing off to someone he didnt know, he may do it to the wrong person one day....& he will get put back in place very smartly.
1 guy I know of here, very nice bloke, BUT...if abuse was aimed his way for no valid reason, he wouldn't even ask "whats your problem" He has a VERY short fuse...........the guys day would really have been ruined

Yeah guys I agree an eye for an eye but some times you have to just bite your lip.

Guys that know me well know I would rather a fight than a feed but when you meet fellow SUP'ers for the first time the last thing you want is for them to think your a Tosser for causing a frackar with the locals.

Yer that little incident was fair enough,I caught the wave a good 10-15mtrs further out but the longboarder was slightly more inside, while I was riding the wave he turned and started paddling for it and my competitive aggression kicked in[instinctively from years of playing footy] and I surfed passed the front of him to block his path onto the wave.Technically he's got me and being fairly new to this I accept that and lesson learnt won't do it again.
The bloke at Pines the other day doesn't only have issues with Sup but he's at war with the whole world around him,its him that's suffering.I missed the outburst but also accept this banter will go on,it seems to be only the 5% minority anyway in my experience and it will get the adrenalin going ,so be it.The other 95% are there surfing for the right reasons,

That sounds like that side. Years ago while surfing big left a local took my thongs, (my jandals for you BP) and left his crappy pair for me to walk back up the hill. But then again it happens everywhere and everyday, it jealousy because SUP's get more waves and have more fun

Yeah it's the minority that are bitter about SUP's. I surfed (SUPed) a wave in Torquay
with about 15 regular surfers on Saturday and not the slightest anger in the water.
I got heaps of waves but let heaps go through. I was always sitting wide and picked
off the bigger ones that no-one was in the right spot for. They were all too busy
competing against each other to get waves, sitting deeper and deeper.

Even the better guys that aren't super stoked you are out there watch every turn you
do as you surf past them when they are paddling back out. Inside I think they have respect.

Has anyone ever got lip from a shortboarder or is it just mal guys?

Jamie O'Brien is sooo good! Thats a mental barrel, pulls straight in on his B/H and destrys it!

How's the guys in the water that probably shat themselves thinking Jamie was going to land on 'em.

Greenie,

As usual the voice of reason appears from the dark depths of WA.

Santa on sup cross stepping is what we need lots more of.

Smiles and FUN in the surf is what we need more of, thats what it is all suposed to be about.

Well thats our perception anyway.

Big high 5 to you Owen as Kristi says your "Sick" in the best kind of way"

The thing that strikes me as odd about this thread and other similar threads is it all sounds similar to things in the news:

- violence in Melbourne streets

- school yard riots ending in death

- threats bullying and victimisation

The only difference is that the people are pushing 40-50.

Just another sad reflection on modern society. It seems being competetive and aggressive is a trait people are encouraged to show.It amuses me to hear even on surfing forums like this one how we describe good surfing , with terms like tore that wave apart , shredded it to pieces , or great aggressive surfing , dominated that wave ect ect.Personally i dont get excited about watching surfers so called shredding , to me it looks like they are totally out of sync with the wave.

Hahaha cheers Phill and Kristi
Id rather let the agro tool in the line up get ten waves and for me to go somewhere else, than get one wave with him screaming and yelling because he thinks I dont belong there.
Some people are lovers and some people are fighters. I just dont have the fight in me. I will leave that to the 'Im a shortboarder mentality' surfers. We dont need that in stand up paddling.
But in saying that I dont really get that vibe from any of the short or longboarders where I SUP. I guess because we all know each other.
The other day I took off on a set wave and as everyone on the inside scrambled to get out of my way, a longloarder got in my way. I just went around him and didnt even think anything of it. But when I paddled back out he paddled over and said sorry for getting in the way. I said it was nothing and didnt even realise you were in the way. But that attitude from everyone sends good vibes through the water and everyone is relaxed and happy. By the way I was ripping grooving it up on the 8'5
I know that this is not always the case as I have seen plenty of agro from all sorts of board riders from places north, south and east
