It was pretty wild out there yesterday.. First good wind in ages..

The average wind speed was about 30 knots with many gusts over 40..

It's amazing how calm and flat the GoPro makes it look..

How are you getting on with the Riggs fin?

The new Larry Alison/Jeremy Riggs Aercor fin is great but there are pros and cons because it seems like you can't have your cake and eat it to.

Your fin does many things and on the plus side the fin seems very fast with very little drag and it is very loose and makes turning these long DW boards much easier.

On the down side you do loose a noticeable amount of stability (if you're used to using bigger fins) and you also loose some stability in tracking when going slow and side waves seem to be able to push the board around more.. Even paddle strokes seem to effect board tracking more with this fin.. It was very messy out there yesterday with nothing lining up like it usually does.. It seems like with every slight variation it wind direction and strength along with tide changes each DW day seems different.. I'm looking forward to using this fin more.. It seemed almost too loose at times but I remember my first DW days on my original 12' Glide and once off and planing I was all over the place because the board felt so fast.. and so loose.. But you soon get used to it and it all settles down to where you have full controle.. I feel that I have not yet learned to fully controle this in but I'm sure it will come.

So is this fin is right for you? .. Well it depends on what your fin priorities are.. Stability and tracking or speed and turning.. Most smaller people don't have stability or tracking issues ever so it's a win, win situation or them.. Some bigger guys need a little more fin and there's plenty of other fin options out there now.. It's great that Jeremy and Larry are putting their time and effort into making these fins better for us.

Yeah that's pretty much my experience with mine in my WoW...but the only time I've used it was on that crazy 45knot day we had a couple of months ago (you remember...the "eventful" one) and I had a small ventral fin in that probably didn't help matters. Still reserving my judgement on it for my uses, keen to try it on a more moderate DW when conditions are a bit more orderly.

the fin sounds like i thought it would go. not to sure i would be keen because a lot of our runs there is a fair amount of side on action

cheers

What DJ and I have said is consistent with what Jeremy said when I sent him some feedback on the fin...it's designed to work when wind and swells are lined up nicely...not so much for the confused, short-period slop that we often (usually?)get. My experience of it on sections that WERE lined up, it felt bloody fantastic. Like I said, I'm reserving my judgement but I suspect I'm too fat and clumsy to get the best out of it in our conditions.
