We are heading there in early July (school hols). We are staying in Sanur with the help of Jankie from SUP Bali. I am hoping to hire a board while over there. Not sure if I will take my paddle or not??

The beauty of Bali is that it is truly whatever you want it to be.

Want the biggest waves of your life?

Want the mellowest fun waves ever?

Want to drink chlorophyl and do yoga in the mountains?

Want to get drunk all day everyday, get sunburnt, wear Bintang singlets and chase easy chicks from Perth or Adelaide?

It's all there for you as you want it, cheap and easy to access.

Perhaps a better question would be for you what kind of family holiday do you want?

If your Missus like most I know wants to be close but not completely in the madness but still enjoys restaurants and shopping etc I would recommend the North Legian to Seminyak area. Padma in Legian is popular, has good baby sitters for the kids and is a nice place for your missus to hang undisturbed while you dissapear for a few waves. Happy wife, happy life as they say! There are so many good hotels in this area cheaper though. For my money for a family trip this is the area you want to be.

Waves wise, everything from Beach Breaks, secret spots, mellow points and famous reefs. As above our winter is the best time for swell in general in particular for the Bukit (Ulu's, Padang, Bingin etc) but at the other end of the year the other side (Nusa Dua etc) can be good and generally with less crowds.

My favourite time of year is the shoulder seasons, less crowds and variable winds so you surf Ulu's one day, Nusa Dua the next. Best tip though, stay away from Kuta unless you like mayhem or big nights out.

Hope that helps.
