Not wanting to steal DJ's thunder, but something like an 11'6" Naish Nalu would suit. I'm the same weight and have had mine for a few years with my kids and dog on it - it's perfect for what you describe.

Yes I agree..

As far far as the Naish brand goes you have quite a few to choose from concidering your weight..

The 9'8" x 34" Odysseus will work for mostly surfing.

The 11'6" x 30" Nalu would be a great allrounder.

The 12'6" x 30" Glide would be a good choice for mostly flat water.

The 14' x 30" Glide would be another good flat water choice with great downwinder ability.

To be able to paddle with kids or pets you need something at least 11' long and at least 30" wide.. and very thick..

The new new 12' x 34" Glide Air inflatable will work but mostly for flat water.

The 11 x 34 and 12' x 35" Soft top Mana would also be good allrounder options..

Lots to choose from in just the Naish brand.

I'm sure there's plenty of other good options in other brands.. Make sure you demo first if possable..

I'm 6'2" and 125 kgs, I have a Naish 14' x 29" 2014 (280 L) I use for flat water and hopefully down winders one day.

I recently purchased a JP fusion 10'8" x 34" (194 L) for the surf.

My first purchase was a SupLove 11' 2" x 29" (180 L).

All of the above boards are great but are more suited to a different type of paddling. I initially thought that I would be more a flatwater paddler with the occasional surf, hence the purchase of the SupLove.

I really enjoy flatwater paddling in enclosed waters, hence the purchase of the Glide.

Lately I have been enjoying surfing, therefore the purchase of the JP Fusion.

The Fusion is incredibly stable and could be used for all types of paddling but would be very slow on a distance paddle.

The issue that I have found with an all rounder is that a board that is better in flat water may not be well suited to the surf due it being longer and narrower.

However a board that is suited to the surf may not perform well in the flat water due to it being shorter, wider and generally with more rocker.

I initially purchased a board that was an all rounder that was more suited to the flatwater and when I ventured into the surf I found it difficult as the board was 11' 2" x 29" (180 L).

My advice would be to determine where you will be paddling and remember that an all round board that is geared towards surfing will still work fine in flat water, it just won't be as fast, bearing in mind that any "all round" board geared towards flatwater is not going to be anywhere near as fast as a dedicated flatwater board.

Have a look at Peter Dorries introductory video on SUP, it has some great advice on boards & paddles.

Follow everyones advice and demo .... demo .... demo.

Thanks for all the advice guys am thinking I might have to go and demo a few thinking the 11'6 nalu or 10'10 for the extra width, possibly a 12'6 glide . Would the 10,10 suit my needs? Any thoughts?

I think you need to think about what your main use will be, and whether you're interested in paddling with others. I'm 6'2 and 110kg and started out on an 11'0 Fanatic Fly. It was great to get used to being on the water, and could easily float me and my 6 year old daughter. But I got more interested in paddling with others, who all paddled 14' race boards and I had no chance of keeping up...until I traded my all rounder for a new shiny 14 ' Naish Glide. I love it...and can still put my now 7 year old on the front for some exploring!

At 110kgs the 10'10" Nalu should float you ok.. but the board will struggle if you try and paddle it with a kid on board as well as you.. IMO..

I was about 90 kg when I did this and I felt like I was at the upper end of the recommended max weight [which is 109kg according to Naish]

For some reason the Naish surf SUP's don't appear to be as stable as their race/flatwater boards.

I demo'ed a few Nalu's and Mana's and it appeared that the volume may have been overstated or they were not as stable for other reasons, possible being narrower?

With regards to surfboards for bigger blokes, the Fanatic Allwave 9'10" x 33 is a good board and also the JP Fusion 10'8 x 34, I went with the fusion at my weight of 125 kgs.

If you decide to go with a 12'6 or 14' flat water/race board then there is a lot to choose from, IMO the Naish boards excel with regards to stability in this type of board.

Prior to purchasing my glide I test drove a few 14' boards with the Naish 14' glide being the pick of the bunch for me.

With the flat water/race boards you may hear talk of secondary stability where some boards tip to a certain point and then depending on your skill do not tend to go much further. To me stability is just that "stability"! Having a board tip beyond your comfort zone doesn't equate to it being stable.

Being on the large side, I am of the opinion that the stability of a board is crucial to being able to paddle effectively, if you are concentrating on staying upright you won't be concentrating on paddling and there is a high likelihood you won't be enjoying your paddling.

Remember the majority of boards are built for the average man, there is no "Big Man's World" for SUP's. If the average 85 kg bloke threw 1 & 1/2-2 20 kg bags of concrete on his board then he may have an idea of what its like to paddle a board at 110 -125 kgs, the stability changes significantly.

Good luck with the board choice and remember to demo ... demo ... demo!

I am 106 kgs and have just started on a Sup. I bought a Jimmy Lewis 10'6" x 35" board. It floats and surfs well and suits my needs nicely, highly recommended

Starboard Atlas. 12'0 x 33", 236 litres. Was my first board, other have come and gone but the Atlas is a keeper. Learn, cruise, surf, carry a kid or two, even bolt a windsurf rig on. If you're in or around Melb you'd be welcome to try mine.

I was in a similar situation to you lassie about this time last year - i'm 6'9" and about 110kgs as well (yeah right, post Christmas…).

I ended up lucking into a 2nd hand 2013 Starboard Avanti - 11'2" x 36". It's amazingly stable (aircraft carrier?) and it got me from being a sceptic to a full-on convert. It's a pretty good all-rounder and perfectly capable of carrying kids etc as well as myself.

Having said that, i've also got a 2014 Naish 14' x 29" Glide GS - just about the perfect board for the larger, more powerful, kind of bloke!!!

Both of those boards are over you budget if they're new, but keep your eyes peeled in the For Sale section on here and it'll only be a matter of time before something crops up. As far as a paddle goes i'd go for a new one - and at your height and weight an adjustable one might be a bit too flex/fragile, personally you'll probably better off with a fixed paddle.
