Dear 'breezers,

Bought a 12'6 the other day on the Seabreeze classifieds, "in perfect condition" "shop demo, only used a few times, approx 6 hours in the water"

Sounds like the board for me... arrived the other day... not perfect at all, some pretty decent fractures in the carbon covered by clear plastic rail tape, the breather plug leaks, I know about the "Caveat Emptor", let the buyer beware.. but going on the photos in the advert ( I saved a copy of the advert) well couldn't see any problems and besides I was told its in "perfect Condition" anyway...

I guess my perception of perfection is a little different than others..

Anyway the board still paddles well etc,etc so no problems really is there?......well anyway, just be a little mindful that all is not how it seems in the rosy world of sales....

Yours Truly

Just a little Pissed Off.....

Fair call on caveat emptor if the board was advertised as "cracks in the carbon, patched with rail tape" but if it was advertised as "in perfect condition" you have a legit beef. If it's local, take it back...if interstate, will the seller kick in something for the cost of repairs to bring it up to advertised condition? (have negotiated this successfully on e(vil)Bay a couple of times when goods weren't up to as-advertised condition). They should at least do that, especially if the seller is a shop with a rep to protect.

Was it from shop or personal seller?
I bought board from here was out of town also. Seller was clear in stating had repairs ask for details. Then he sent me a dozen pictures via email from all angles showing the repaired work. Made me very satisfied in handing the cash over for something I hadn't seen in person..

I bought a second hand board form interstate, as you mentioned, it was supposed to be in tip top condition.

I always ask the following questions:

Does it have any dings?
Has it been previously repaired?
Has it ever had water in it?
Are there any major scratches?

The board arrived with damage to the nose and and water was leaking from it. There was a repair on the underside of the board near the nose that had changed colour due to the water inside the board. When lifting the board out of the pantec delivery truck I could feel the water all over it.

Upon arrival, I immediately took photos and sent them to the retailer. The retailer acknowledge the defects, I returned the board and received a full refund.

In this case the board was traded and I don't think the retailer went over the board too well and relied on the information from the trader of the board that it was immaculate.

Don't rely on photos as the light and camera flash can sometime make an ordinary board look amazing.

Or the opposite can happen when I purchased a surf ski, the photos made the ski look ordinary but I went for a look any way, upon inspection the ski was like new, only used 3 x times so I snapped it up.

I wouldn't touch a second hand board unless I could actually view it in person, people have different views on the term "immaculate".

Thanks for the responses, I will show the lads at training this week to see what the consensus is.. but it is pretty annoying, not to mention the negative energy and time to have to follow up on what would or should have been a simple transaction.
I think I would be happier just returning the board and getting a full refund as to get the board repaired and the time spent doing so becomes my problem when that shouldn't be the case.
I agree Big Lump, with hindsight, without personally inspecting the board in the first instance and relying on "others" or in this case the seller to cast a subjective point of view on how they determine perfection could lead to disappointment, but on the other hand, also leaves the seller open to misrepresentation should the matter be determined by the legal process.

As my dear old Mum used to say, honesty is the best policy....

Thanks Mac, yes sent an email last night to the retailer, to their credit and willingness to achieve an amicable result, they have offered either cash back for repairs and inconvenience or a total refund.
So there after all the agonizing, it's nice to have a happy ending

About to buy a newish board privately off the 'breeze (interstate) and its a significant amount of money to me.

Anyone have tips for a safe way to make payment other than a direct deposit?

I don't know how you can totally protect your money but if you have any friends you paddle with who are Seabreeze regulars, ask them if they know the seller. Reputation is everything and a lot of us know one another from interstate events. With a couple degrees of separation, you may be able to find someone who can vouch for the board and the integrity of the seller.

I haven't used it for SUP's but i buy boats and many other products and all conversations start on the phone so i would think its similar.

I always ask for a score out of ten. As you have said in excellent condition can vary from person to person, but if they score it a 8 to of 10 then thats genuinely not bad. If they start scoring 7 or even 6 out of 10 then you need to ask many other more pushy questions.

Even ask the same question over and over again, different wording each time and make sure you get the same answers..

If you are registered with Paypal, and the seller is also registered you can pay them via paypal just using their email address. This then gives you the protections and insurance that come with paypal, also affords you the use of their dispute resolution service in case it does not measure up when you receive it.I only use this method to buy on line ,whether it be private or a shop. I have no connection to paypal.

I bought a board last week on Seabreeze from a shop on the Goldie.

I was absolutely amazed at the care they took with packaging the board so that there wasno way anyone was going to be able to damage it!

I would happily recommend theses guys to anyone. (Surf fx)

They gave me an accurate appraisal of the board's condition over the phone,

the board arrived in Melbourne three days after purchase in immaculate condion at the freight cost of $70.

Stoked!!!

Holy crap, $70 to freight from the Goldy to Melbourne? That's a bargain. I've been quoted over $400. The crew going to nationals should chase up this courier company.

Geez Ockanui... yep, what a pain in the a%*s.
I wonder if there are protections in place under Australian Consumer Law... surely there is - especially from a shop, not sure how the same works if it is private sale. Perhaps "The Checkout" boys and girls (CNNNN, Chaser, Hamster Wheel, etc) could go to town on this for a more insightful analysis.

Nice to hear the shop came to the party but what a disappointment for you... nothing worse than when your expectation is not met! The bitter-taste in your mouth will probably hang around like a bad smell in an elevator...
