we had a training paddle(working on a lot of things after the coffs race, doing that race was a real quick way to find out what is required and try to improve- it was my first race) today up the canals at tally ck and for some fun went to the ck mouth for some waves and runners. i currently have the orange and the green dc 17'. i started on the greenie. a really agile lively board that surfs well. has more volume and a bit more nose rocker. then i swapped on the the orange. this board has a displacement nose straight into concave and chimes all the way through. while not as lively and it does suck down, it catches anything and runs for ages, a lot longer than the greenie.it has a flatter nose rocker. i'm far from an expert, just wondering if anyone local( that is where the doctor race is being held) might be able to give some tips and which might be the better board for the doctor race. any tips welcomed
cheers

The Freo doctor usually blows most afternoons over here. So the prevailing conditions would be small swell with a strong wind. Short small chop would be the most accurate description.

Which board works best with 20 knots plus with no swell? That's what you bring; sounds like the orangie.

actually, speaking about paddles, i have decided about 9.5 inch about my head seems to be working well.i have a qb 8/7 elite and a shaka. tending to go with the shaka at the moment. i wasn't real happy with the t-bar handle off the shaka for distance stuff and while the elite handle is good, i had a look at dc handles on the paddles he makes and found them very good. they have a nice roll of the back and seem to melt into your hand. so we took of the shaka t/bar handle and fitted one of dc's on. i have ended up with a very nice handle, with that awesome shaft of the shaka and the blade feels very nice size wise

I was over at Rotto yesterday and was checking out the conditions on the way back.

I was actually suprised how much swell there was overthe first half of the trip to Freo - the Ferry was pitching and rolling pretty well, definitely good swell runners to be had, not just wind chop. About half way or so the swell dropped and conditions changed to wind chop like Hilly said. Wind and swell were both around SSW

It was also quite noticable that Scarbs wasnt a direct down wind run until about halfway back to Freo - so the run from Rotto to Scarbs will be more side - tail, not straight downwind.

Yeh, I was thinking the same.....it is open ocean and there should definitely be some swells to catch.
Only problem is like Shep said, wind direction. Just come in from another great run up the coast and the wind for this is perfect at the moment, southerlies at your back. nice to be able to change sides paddling every 3-4 strokes.
What worries me about the Rotto run is having to paddle one side only to make it to Scarborough
Still, gonna give it a go and see.
