Hi mate, mine is booked for next Thursday.

I'm being told 8 weeks out of the water but I'm going to aim for 4 weeks out then 4 weeks flat water with my ear covered to ensure no wind and / or water and hopefully back into it after 8 weeks without losing too much condition after maintaining the 4 weeks flat water paddling.

Hearing some good stories and some horror stories and not sure what's fact and what's fiction but I'm 98% closed in my right ear and it's been a drama with infection so time to get it drilled.

My biggest issue at this stage is NIB who are sitting on the fence regarding part payment - not happy about their lack of support.

Be sure to look after it in the long term, the bone grows back and can do quickly and remember it's the wind which is your enemy and not water so protect the ear canal from cold air (particularly early morning dawn sessions).

I wear a GATH helmet every session flat water and waves now to save my 70% closed left ear from getting worse.

Good luck mate.

Did you see the JOB movie. Jamie had a serious ear op as a young kid and his dad didn't want him falling behind with his surfing so Mick put plugs in his ears, put a swimming cap on him, wrapped his head in silver electrical tape (If you see the movie you would think he used the whole roll), then chucked a surfing helmet on top.

Hi sharpie
Had both ears done. One didn't go well and was out of the water for 4 months.
Make sure you wear plugs when you do re-enter the water as being the bodies natural protection the bone growth returns quicker the second time round.
good luck

Got both ears done last year plus ear drum overhaul. Don't want to go there again, keep the pain killers up for the first few days and just sleep.

So why in the (almost) middle of summer?

Had right ear done in middle of last winter, 8 weeks and back in water with out a problem (i have been using "Doc's pro plugs" for a while now)

Re second opp on same ear, I asked and was told i would never need a repeat opp.

Got drilled in Oct and was allowed back in the water after 4 weeks He said that was the quickest possible if u heal well. Was Flatwater supping a little earlier (carefully)
Just plug it well after you are allowed back in as I got a bit lazy after 6 weeks and had a few minor setbacks probably from getting it too wet too early but nothing to stop me surfing.
Overall it wasn't to bad. Good luck

Seems to vary a bit about pain, recovery time etc. For me there wasn't much pain after the op, but a mate said that with his he felt like someone was sticking a red hot knife into his ear - for some weeks afterwards.

Worse thing for me was being totally deaf on one side for weeks, while the gauze packing was in the ear.

Goodluck with the OP....do you need me to feed Coops a bacon n egg roll why you are out of action? Was it the backwash from last Friday arvo that finally undid ya? You would not believe the people that have been talking about it - some are calling it the best wipe out they have seen in years. Can not believe I missed it Word has it you destroyed the left before heading right when it all came undone

thanks so much for your kind replys. ear was starting to drive me crazy about 12 months ago, so went to specialist, he said yea there bad. so had a chat to a mate at work who had just had the op he told me to get on the public waiting list and you dont have to pay a cent, being a tight ass thought, sweet free op im up for that. hope i dont get an infection but cause another bloke i talked to was out for 5-6 months. and yea ted got splattered by a 2 foot backwash coming at me off the rocks dont really know what happened 1 minute i was cruising the next there was board, paddle, arms, legs, big fat body all trying to fly in different directions, talk about having to pull myself together.

Sharpie have you had a second opinion mate I was referred to an ENT specialist on the Gold coast 6 years ago who said I needed to have the op done urgently I went and got a second opinion from a navy doctor GP in my area that has had a lot of experience with these things so far i have avoided the op by using aqua ear religiously
Cheers Boof

So what are the signs???
My ears have small canals the doc says - I know I have to use the smallest earbuds on my headphones and even then they dont fit well and fall out cos they wont push in properly, plus my ears are almost endlessly getting gunk/infected; like we are talking years.
Sorry... dont want to go all 'google-doc' here... just constantly annoyed by my ears these days!

Sounds like its time for the drill buddy.
Go see a GP for a referall to a ENT specialist, they will set you straight.
