I am looking at trying the race side of sup and was wondering what an average race/tanning pace would be ? what do people use to measure distance and speed I have a GT-11 that I use for speed sailing but was thinking about getting a Garmin gps watch ?
I am no expert put i use a garmin 310 xt when by myself i try and stick to between 8.5 and 9.5 ks over a minnimum of 10 kilometre paddle. and in races i still only finish mid feild [but still fun]
Motorola Defy water resistant mobile phone. My tracks application. It speaks to you every 1km telling you your average speed for the preceeding km.Easy to use analylasis charts and you can ring ahead to order fish and chips.
I use the tried and true rope with knots, tie it to your paddle and as you stroke, the rope is thrown forward and as you follow through with your stroke, count the knots that pass between the bow and your feet.
Have a look at this puppy - www.mobii.com SA made which over and above the obvious (speed distance mapping) does the following: - Heartrate - Audio prompts - ave speed - heartrate - distance to go etc -Music - Built in Accelorometer which when fitted on arm gives your stroke cadence and glide length per stroke - Video synchronisation - allows you to overlay data on your go-pro video - Fully waterproof and weighs 53grams
I't a fantastic training tool - I've set up audio prompts to give me ave. speed and heartrate every 100 meters - you can even get your missus to record prompts if built in ones are not inspiring enough!
Only problem is that they are not yet approved outside of RSA from what I understand - so may not be available in Oz

here they sell for R2600-ish and HRM is another R450-ish and then you want to upgrade std earphones to waterproof for another R100 (roughly 400 Oz Dollars for full package) - but as I said, I don't think they can sell them outside SA yet....
Thanks for all the info, looks like everyone uses something different unlike speed sailing were everyone uses the same model. I might have a look at the new Nike gps watch coming out next month or the garmin 310 xt. the mobii looks really good plenty of features and the music feature would be handy but if it's not available in OZ i guess that one's out.
I use a Speedpuck. Easy to see at a glance what speed you are doing, floats and attacks with heavy velcro tape. Have speed set to km/h which refreshes every 0.5 sec. Software can show a lot of downloadable GPS data, I don't really bother though using it to train with checking my stroke is efficient and trying to find what works - still looking!!!!
