hi guys,

I'd really appreciate some pointers with selection of my first paddleboard. I've searched the forum but couldn't find the same question (from someone with the same requirements) but forgive me if i missed something.

I live in the northern suburbs of Sydney and am looking at using a SUP at places like Freshwater (when flat or small waves), on places like Narrabeen lakes and on rivers.

I'm around 83kgs and and have trailed a few paddleboards. I'm leaning towards the Naish 10" 6' x 30. I was close to purchasing the GS version but then found out that the GT version (and some others SUPs) have fittings for windsurfing sails. I'm looking at using the SUP for paddleboarding but if they are ok for windsurfing I'd like to have that option too.

Given this information do you think the Naish 10" 6' X 30 is the way to go or is there a smarter choice?

Thanks in advance.

IMO the 10'6" Nalu would be a good choice.. but I think the 10'10" Nalu might be an even better choice..

G'day I've ridden a mates 11.6 Nalu in flat and surf and it is very stable and easy to ride. Last weekend I also dem'd the fanatic fly 10.6 (about 177 litres) and it was an amazing board in 2-3 foot surf and on flat choppy water. These boards also have mast inserts for a sail.

On the same day I tried the Allwave 8'11 (150 litres) and 9'5 (also about 177 litres) but not nearly as easy to handle as the Fly or Nalu in choppy conditions. I am only 70kgs and have been supping for 12 months. The 9.5 was way too corky but interestingly the fly was not (I finally understand what that means) my newbie mate also much preferred the fly to the Allwave as a beginner in smallish choppy surf.

I bought the 8'11 Allwave... This board is super easy to ride for someone with a little experience and turns on a dime. However, I am keen to buy a 2nd board for family and friends to intro them to the sport. I am definitely going for the Fly 10'6 and I will happily use it myself on those tiny or choppy days.

Rule 1 If in doubt, dem. Rule 2 you are always in doubt.

PS: I've bought 2 boards in 6 months on recommendations or hype that were not right for me. Never again!!! :-p

I'm also on the Northern Beaches. And also weigh 83 kg. I'm not from a surfing background, but from a kitesurfing and windsurfing background.

I like a combination of places like you (e.g. Freshie, Fishermans, Narra lakes and Clontarf). I want to get in to downwinders next. I initially bought a Mana 10' and more recently a Glide 14'.

If I had to buy it again, I would probably for for a more surf specific board, like the Hokua (as I am already finding the Mana a bit too much like a longboard, although thats not a bad thing when the surf is small; or a smaller Mana.)

The guys at the local shops will do demos on a all the kit.

Go and see the boys at Wind Surf Snow, Long Reef. They will steer you in the right direction.

I agree that if want to progress your SUP surfing then choose a board which will cater for your paddling and balance improvement .

Fanatic Fly, Naish, Starboard, JP and others all have all around boards. Demo and see what feels best for you. Around the 10 1/2 foot mark is usually a good place to start. Flatter water and persistence. Demo is the go and enjoy!

If you can take a lesson or three, watch Youtube videos on paddle technique, good places to start

Mate, the best thing that you can do is to go into one of the shops they will help you out with good advice and a good deal, there are a few around

wssboards.com.au/ - Collaroy
www.supgearaustralia.com/ - Pittwater Rd
www.balmoralboards.com.au/ - Pittwater Rd

You will be able to demo boards and will get better advice than what is often touted here

Thanks for the links Anton. That's not us - unless you want to buy a snowboard

Here is the correct link to Balmoral Paddlesurf in North Manly

Tony you really cant go past the 10'6 Nalu in GT or GS. it is one of those boards where everything comes together, like your favourite golf club or favourite surf board. Excellent glide and surfs really well. It the only board in our demo trailer that the boys will grab to go surfing that is bigger than what they normally ride.

Thanks for all the comments - much appreciated. I've made a note of some of the specific other boards, as well as the longer Nalu, and will see if i can try them out over the weekend.

Hopefully the following weekend I'll be supping on my own board - finally.
