They sometimes have a box with a 12'6" opening and if your board fits in it's legal.
So a board could be a few inches longer and bent like a banana and it would still be a 12'6"..
At the Battle of the Paddle there were guys hacksawing an inch or so off the nose of their boards so they could race..
