anyone surfing the new nosed gerry 8'10(i think it's that). looks the goods- weights ok, nicely foiled

how does it compare to other boards?

i had a flatwater paddle on this board(the dreaded demo day). comparing to my other boards when i'm just paddling them, it has all the signs of surfing and behaving very nicely. seemed pretty stable too

any thoughts
cheers

ps. no replys from riff raff (retailers) please just kidding

I'm gunna try to borrow scottys (dont tell him, I want to catch him off guard) and see if I can ride it. I reckon it'll be way too tippy for me but keen to give it a bash even though I dislike pointy sups as you know. I did have a little surf on another brand 8.5 the other day and gave a coupla mates a great laugh as I wobbled and splashed all over laceys did manage 1 wave on it though and it surfed unreal - way way too tippy for my level of experience though.

The 8-10 is the new improved version off the 8-11 (all good changes) looks like a great board .The only down side is that it has the same paint as the old model which chipped terribly , I raised this issue with the Surftech guys at Merimbula and they told me to tape the rails fit a paddle guard and learn to paddle properly....nice answer boys

Seems strange that you DON'T have to do that on other production boards , or other boards in the Surftec range ?????

since the tufflite range are all coming out of the same factory, I would have thought they use the same brand and type of paint, just different colours. My Surftech Taky chipped down the rails, becuase I banged the crap out of it learning. I think any board any brand will chip/scuff if you hit it with the fine edge of a paddle...of the boards Ive had the Surttech tufflite has held up the best.

Piros, what other surftechs have you owned besides the Gerry, how did they fair?

arent they a complete different lay up/selling point? some sort of fibre flex?
I do not think it claims to be tufflite.

One isnt really enough of a representative sample to be statisticly valid. Repetition is a concept that needs to be in there as well....

Those JM's are the Ultra flex construction...sort of half way between a pop out and a hand shaped board. The tufflite 9.8 is still a current board, the Ultra flex will be 9.8, 9.0? 8.6....Candice Appleby will be having 2 boards also in Ultra flex.have a good look at the tufflite and the Ultra Flex side by side, you'll clearly see the differences like rocker, tail rocker, more refined rail edges etc etc. I was hoping they would have the 8.6 at the demo day

its not just the colour in the paint, but different cloth etc...like the Fibre Flex that LSD and SA have been using. Simon at Dolphin Surfcraft are right up on all the different cloths and there pros and cons.

This is the crazy part at Merimbula they had the new model 8-10 Gerry and next to it was a 8-11 demo with no paint left on either rail from tip to tail , yes this was on display every 8-11 I have come across is the same (4 off) as a consumer I just don't think it's acceptable and I don't like being told by a rep it is.

The 9-0 Jamie Mitchell looks the goods hanging out to try that.

ok so both the new pointy nose 8-10 and the 8-11 round nose where chipped and the others you have seen. My point is, put 1000 other boards from Surftech and other brands in the EXACT SAME conditions and I dont think the out come would be much different. hit the edge of a board enough times with a good paddle and paint will loose. Glassed boards with pigment in the glass rather than on the board get opaque blocthes where the paddle hits...colour and undercoat colour also play a big roll, colours like yellow or musterd etc dont show up as much as say a red rail over a white under coat....so whie some may look way more chipped they may acctually be not....

O.K if you want numbers here you go in the past 2 years I have owned over 20 sups I won't name brands , some didn't chip at all , some chipped a little and ONE chipped so bad the green rails were almost white for the length of the board , exactly the same as the board on display at Merimbula. Even the surftech guys agreed they chip badly but they didn't see it as a problem....I do and that's my point.

Mate if you are happy with hacked up rail tape down both sides of your board (really improves performance) and a garden hose paddle guard around the edge of your $500 paddle...great I'm stoked for you..BUT you won't see any of that sh!t on my gear because I don't need it.

Thats exactly what the surftech guys told me what I needed to do to stop the chipping...starting to get my point now ?

well what ever works for you....I was just trying to take opinion and emotion out of the equation as it tends to distort fact. Did you ride all boards the exact same amount in the exact same conditions?

The Gerry you refer to at Mambo is a demo board and is open to novice paddlers with not the best (rail saving) technique.

Here are some facts. My taky chipped, it was tufflite, I learnt to paddle on this board and it copped a flogging. But you couldnt notice it that much because the paint and undercoat are similar colours. My mate has owned and surfed the crap out of PSH and Naish. Both have chipped about the same for him but it doesnt show up as much on the Naish because of the colours. Another mate has a PSH 9.8 this shows the few(he has ridden it bugger all) chips bad because it is aqua over white. Another mate has a Magic carpet which is heavily used and has the normal chips, it shows up more so again becasue of dark greay over white.

Re Gerry's doing it and not other Surftech Tufflite. I would find it hard to imagine a production company using a different brand and type of paint for one or two models in a very large range of same construction....Think economics, buying paint from one supplier, getting better price re volume, setting paint guns up etc the same to suit type and consistancy etc etc etc..... So that is to say ALL Surftech's would chip the same, good or bad.

Here is another spanner in the works, what about plane shape of the board? full nose, , pointy, wide, flat or full rocker, tail shape....all these variables play a role in how a board paddles including the likely hood, more or less, to hit the rails with the paddle.

My self im more likely to hit the rail in 1 foot slop onshore chop, than in 3-4 foot clean

I still hit my rails. I CHOOSE to use the all weather tape from bunnings on the board. AS IM NOT A PRO SURFER, SURFING VERTICAL, ALL TIME MOVES....the thin tape has no noticable effect on performance

cheers,
