Hi
As a new SUP addict after a trial on flat water I got a 11,2 blend (2009)thinking this is a good allrounder (it s reviews were good). At 110 kg on the beach on the weekend i spent 3 hours climbing back on ,is this too small for me to mess around with off our perth coast?,How long do I need to practice for and is it worth getting a shorter fatter board,at 30 inch wide i thought it would be ok.Got sore knees from kneeling down !
Help

mate my first board was the blend but the earlier model i think it had a bit more volume. i practiced heaps on the flat after a knee reco but still really struggled in the surf for a while. Now i find it really stable, we a similar weight i think if you stick with it and do a bit more flat water work it will eventually click.

good luck
Andrew

thanks for the encouragement !Im impatient and also had major knee work so it hurts (2 days later)after a few hours. The older one was mor volume and at 178 lit maybe i should just move onto one I can enjoy ?maybe mana which has a 200 lit board?

Any ideas ?
Using a non sup paddle seems to maybe affect the whole situation, worth getting a dedicated sup paddle could miracousley cure me?
How long is required 10 hours? before it clicks

The more time you spend on flat water the quicker you will pick up surfing. I remember speaking to a guy a year or so and when he first learnt he would go down to Hillaries at night and paddle around all the boats just to get time on the board, perfect for these hot nights with an easterly.

What sort of paddle are you using Fastback?
Best to use the right gear otherwise you could get into bad habits that may be hard to shake later. Without the right paddle you may also be loading up your arms and back and creating problems you wouldn't have if you used the right paddle.

My first board was the 11'2 and having surfed for a few years I thought it was gonna be easy. Was I wrong. It does take a few weeks to really get your SUP surf legs. I also use to go down to Hillarys with Windy Miller just to get time on water. It does click eventually. Things are still clicking and Im not refering to my knee. Its a bit dodgy but since starting SUP its been the best thing for it. Stick at it and soon you will be ripping on the 11'2

I'd have no idea on the literage of the 12'6". Greeny may know. What about the Naish mana aren't they wider?

Have you considered the Starboard Avanti 11'2 by 36in wide. Give Mike Galvin a call at the Stand-up surf shop in North Freo, i believe he has one you may be able to demo.
P.s get a proper paddle

The 11'2 x 30 Blend is 168L and the 12'6 x 30 Cruiser is 206L
And I also have a second hand Starboard Carbon Wave paddle for sale if you want to try.

2010 Starboard Blend 11'2"x30" = 168L

2011 Starboard Blend 11'2"x30" = 174L

2011 Naish Nalu 11'6"x29 3/4" =231L

But more L does not always = more stability

Hey mate,
Paddle does make a big difference! I used a kayak paddle attached to a broomstick for the first few weeks before I got a proper sup paddle, and the difference was amazing! I didn't even get an expensive sup paddle, but it made it heaps easier to do the basics like go straight and turn lol

Go for the swap....
Or just exchange for sometime!!
At 110 kilos the 11'2 is quite challenging for you to begin with..

The 12'6 will be fine but probably you will outgrow before or later and you can be back on the 11'2 as your bred and butter every day board.
Or even get something with better waves performance.

Or rent a big board for a couple of times till you get it right...

Correct paddle will make difference on your paddling but for balancing on the board you will not get much improvement.
Bye Jankie

just discovered no tufskin 2009 (blule white wide strip)so it is a 2008 ,so must be a 188 lit! which is good ,as maybe I just need a paddle and practice, had a couple of small(very) waves Tue morn and stayed up ,just still under float fully but keen to get back out there ,balance much better on the flat compared to a storm swell!!

practrice ,practice, any one want to paddle at mullas?,morn maybe if keen or evening at hillarys?
