after surfing the board with various fins this was the best surfing setup
however it wasn't the most stable and i can't help thinking it would have more zip with hopefully a bit more stability as a quad. maybe something like this
dale's not much into quads so i'm going to pick murry burton's(one of the foremost quad shapers around) brains on if it would work and what position to put the back fins. any suggestions!!
cheers

Mr Boyd in OG knows a thing or 2 about Quads and I am sure he would help out.

Definitely worth a call me thinks

Yes he has,

He also converted a couple of other SUPS to quad and from what I hear they go pretty well.

Its not that big a decision really just leave the fin box the you have:

Thruster, Quad and 2 + 1 options

I wonder whether you have enough room on the tail for them though???

No idea really

No big issue to put them in, but placement is key, someone with experience would be better.

Looks like it should work but will it be an improvement that is the question????

Be interested to hear how it goes as considering a quad in the future, have quad kite surfboards that rip.

yeah, from what i can make out, there is 2 styles of quads- the type simon anderson does which has the fins out more to rail producing a looser type quad. then there is mr burtons type which has a more narrower throat producing a more driven feel. looking at the tail, i would say a more throatier setup. the naish 9'6' is the most radical version of this i have seen.the latest thing in quads is round/rounded pin tails it does worry me the tail, mainly because the side fins are back a bit already.

Gday lacey,
Quads are sick.My last 2x SUP's are quads. After palying around with thruster set-ups,I found that the quad was the go for me.My 9'4" has quad plugs+fin box.Is that a paddleboard or a shorty?

7'2" starboard sup, i've tried quads on shorties and sups, wasn't a huge fan, but something tells me this could be good on this board.

I was riding 5'10 fish with 9" wide swallow and massive keel fins before I got into SUP,and the quad seems to surf the same for me anyway.Guess youll just have to give it a crack. If you were down this way you could have a go on my new 8'5" its a quad and so far is great for me,

I converted a SB 8'5 from quad to thruster, and prefer it. They basically do different things so no one is "better" than the other. If you are looking for stability on thruster, moving center fin back and going larger is the way, this will also make board more drivey but less loose (7'2 should be pretty loose as is).

The quad wont make the board more stable unless you stick in really big fins in allround. This will cause more drag

Fin placement and fin choice is ultimately more important in my view. Quads are more difficult to set up so if you don't have adjustable boxes (4wfs) or a very clued up shaper (and guy doing what he is told when installing) then you are more likely to get it wrong than a thruster.

I will try and post a pic when I can

yeah i tried a lot of fins in different positions, it just surfed better with the sunnies.loosness is ok, just looking for a bit more zip you are more than likely right from my experiences playing around with sup quads.chances are very good the thruster is better this board is a play around for a custom shorter sup later as it is far shorter than my 8 10.
thx's for your feedback
ps actually, the more i think back to sup quads you are right- doesn't help stability. i might go and see if i can find a slightly bigger centre fin then the sunnie

well i saw mr burton, told him what i hoped to achieve and he did some measurements. took the board to polsie and here is the result

back fins 51/2 inch from the tail with a narrow throat and decided on sa large quad set.
i hurt my knee a week ago, but couldn't resist having a go. i had a few rides on my 8 10 and the knee is a bit unstable and had a few wobbles in the onshore waves.anyway, i went in and took the sb out.didn't gain much stability i was hoping for with the narrow throat, but it paddled better than the sunny setup. it's not easy to stay on at the best of times, so the onshore/rips was making it tough. i have to keep a good posture with shoulders set down and back or it's good night nurse.now the surfing part, my first impressions- a hell of a lot faster and looser than it was as two plus one or thruster. i was very pleased with the speed gain considering the rocker in the board. easily the closest to a shortboard i have been on
cheers

Hey Lacey,

I have tried one of Dales early quads and I liked it a lot. It was in the old days when we were still all on 10-11' boards but I do remember that board well.

I ride a 5 fin shortboard most of the time and my next custom SUP will definately also be a 5 fin. It gives you the speed of a quad but the turns of a thruster. I have had 3 custom made already and we have worked out the fin placement nicely on them.

Dale has even made me a few 7 fin shortboards, for experimentation. The first one only lasted me 2 surfs, unfortunately, as I broke it at P-Pass on a bomb. The new one had a different fin placement and I am still working out the best fin combination for it. Small fins all round seems to work best.

The point of all of this is that if you get a 5 fin SUP made you have many options to play with. I know 5 fins works well but you can always go back down to 4, 3, 2 or 1 fin setups. Changin fin type and sizes also adds to the possibilities.

So many options, so little time.

Catch you on Sunday at the SUPSA club round. I will bring down a few boards to show you what we have come up with.

took the board out at 13 th palmy on sunday arvo - east swell and ne wind and chop. i had a blast. it will take the drop like no other board, how can you nose dive a board with that rocker. i'm sure i was riding the lip down sometimes. its not that bad to pick up waves as the thick blocky tail acts a bit like dw board and helps push you on the wave it also has the most insane projection. i took off one some waves thinking i'm going to die, but just zips through. i was thinking about passing this board on and sure i fall off every so often as i tend to take it out in cr#P conditions, but this will be my bad surf day board. i'm getting another fcs plug put in the front of the front side fins as i feel they are a little to far back,
cheers

nice work in butchering the liitle beast lacey

mega rocker on it makes it nearly impossible to nose dive

i surfed one onceand had a blast in 1ft waves but clean

you can ram 6 turns in the space you could do 2 on my 9'3

was the first time i pulled a reverse on a sup

but since then ive pulled a few but not as effortless as on that thing

geeez i fell off it 1000 times in a 2 hr surf with my 95kg i was pushing it to the bottom of the ocean floor paddlin it around

classic stuff

mate, perfect stance, dead straight bracing paddle arms and luck you can stay on (at 78kg's). it's seems to me the bigger uglier and nastier the wave the better it goes.throw it up in the shorey close out- bugger all water and it just loves it

Yeah I'll bite , go the Quads mate you love chopping up you boards but the results seem pretty good .Those rear fins seem close but that seems to be the trend these days.
