hey just got back from my anual 3 week surf trip to lakey peak sumbawa indo .
surf pumped and i rode 1 6/5 and 1 7/0 shortboards !
up untill i went i was riding my sup mostly . because the waves have been crap . still had heaps of fun .
but after surfing great waves on my short board in indo made me realise that sups are good fun !
but nothing beats good waves on a shortboard .
dont get me wrong i love sups as much as the next man as any one that has supped with me , and theres aheap of breezers out there that have !
i just want to know if theres other crew out there that feel the same way or have had a good surf on there short board lately ! as it is great to surf the shorty in the morning then sup the arvo as i did saturday at the bar . first sup in a month i was a bit wobbly , then got my sh[}:)]t together ! any way enough rambling .
give us your thoughts .

a good solid beachie on a shortboard is the go. it's surprising those bursts of pocket speed after not being on a shortie for a while- no sup can match that. however, i wouldn't bother on a pointbreak, i live at the goldie.i've get more good waves on a sup in one session that i could spend an entire weekend trying to get on a shortie
cheers

Bournda,

Here on the Goldy we've had good waves for a while also. The beachies in particular have been all time. I have been riding my shortboard almost exclusively. Skye Bourton made me a 6'2 x 20 x 2 1/2 80's style RS that I got glassed super light that makes me excited every time I pick it up. 1 x 4oz either side sanded and glassed ultra light with a super light blank. Feels like EPS almost.

SUP surfing is so much fun and I think it fills the gap well between good sessions on my shortboard. You know what I mean: in bad surf on a shortboard its really just running the motions to stay in touch for when the waves come. SUP gave me the benefit of added fitness for my shortboards and the ability to have fun in the surf when the shorty just would not be.

This year though I started paddling outriggers and also got a 17' SUP race board and to be honest it really has taken my SUP surfing glow away, if the surfs bad now for a shorty I am half of the time at OC Training or paddling on my 17'. Give me a chance to not hold a paddle (usually because I am sore all over) and half decent waves and I'm on the 6'2. Funny thing is that this year could be the best I have ever surfed with the added fitness and 10 less kg......

I surfed Bungan on saturday over head high sets, meaty slabs. Brand new Al Merrick Whip 6'1"

Mindblowing barrells, so good!

Makes my 9'6" Naish Nalu feel like a well a big fat 9'6"

Seriously the right board for the right conditions

Rode my brand new 5'10" Insight Matt Penn RPM-G at S.Av on Saturday-great board and waves-but busted the back fin and a chunk of foam and glass out on my 3rd wave-hmmmmm, slightly 'devo'd', in a manly way of course....

I think it's really just horses for courses-I kite, surf, SUP and bodybash-just ride the right equipment dependent upon the conditions-off to G-Land next week for 10 days and I WON'T be taking a SUP, but a bunch of 6'6" mini-guns just right for G-Land's winding barrels-and, having been SUPing heaps the past few weeks, so feeling core fit, nimble and balanced.

SUPs super fun, as is kiting and 'prone' surfing-it's all part of the ocean life for me-and, I suspect, many here.

(Bournda, I do an annual Lakey trip too-different time of the year-to take advantage of different conditions....)

Respect,

I just bought a 6'2" Penn Insight (diff shaper by the same name?)for indo leaving on the 23rd also have a 6'6" Penn semi gun can't wait to ride that! And yes no Sup and I am frothing!

Suping does mean more time on the water and that is the main thing.

Just got to get this damm work finished.....

Everything is about matching conditions with toys. Yes I love my toys, but I also can cover so many different conditions to give me the best stoke!

I live about 20 sec by car or 4 minutes walking from the ocean and about 10 sec walking to pittwater. and my arsenal of toys range from 3 x Shortboards, 1 x 9' Mal, 1 x sailboard with 2 x rigs, 1 x kiteboard and 2 x kites, 2 x Sups, 2 x boogie boards and a boat. (i used to have a much more impressive quiver, but this one seems to keep me out of trouble). But I find that correct use of the right toys makes every session amazing. Sup is by far the most versitile, but nothing compares to an eppic session on my shortboards. Sometimes I feel the need for style and grace and the Mal gives me that. If it's windy, I kite! If it's windier, I windsurf! If the surf's flat and the wind sux, I fish or wakeboard. And if all else fails, I drink beer on my balcony thinking if only I could get paid to smile. Life great in the ocean

I can't wade into those anti arguments as I love doing them all. I guess I just love getting out there, whether it's on a 30 year old retro twin fin, or a 9' plus log, recently a kite, and even more recently a SUP, or one of my shortboards, I love skateboards aswell but I realise theres no water involved.

Just get out there!!

Personal preference??

Well the relaxation a flat water paddle provides on a SUP has very few equals.
Making a hollow drop on a 6'3" thruster...
Charging unmakeable fast sections on the 9'3" McTavish log and making it...
Sliding a longboard whilst bombing a hill.....
'Feeling' the wave as it initially picks you up on the SUP...

Each to their own, horses for courses.

I hope this isn't to much like babble, I've been much good at explaining it.

Couldn't agree more. Still can't top that feeling of my favourite shorty in good waves. But f...k, the SUP is fun some days. and so is the 16 foot downwind board ...and the fish... and the 7'2" gun..... and the ...... it's all good.
