Have had my 8"8 Hokua LE for 2 wks, and have the following feedback (bear in mind I am fairly new to SUP and only very average so far!)
* Stability is amazing - more than my previous, bigger boards
* Have only tried it in small surf so far (as per the video) and so far only a thruster setup but will try the quad setup next
* Very easy to catch even the smallest waves - couple of quick strokes and you are on the wave
* Very easy to paddle out through the break (shape punches through white water very easy)
* Very easy to turn and manoeuvre especially for a relative beginner.
* Very light and easy to transport
* Glides okay on flat water, but does not track that great (probably partly my paddle technique)

All in all, having come from a much bigger board, I am very very happy with it.
Cheers - Cooper

I'm going to ask Laurie to put our weight and size aside avatar to avoid me confused, it would me more practical to understand each other talking about gears
Can be useful too, when i want to enjoy abusing somebody else.

Cheers Greg, I think for anyone who is half good, the 8"3 would be awesome, I just thought I should play it a bit safer and get an 8"8, but stoked with the board :)

I am starting to get concerned with all these questions about my weight! :) Maybe I need to get back on the treadmill! As per reply to DJ I am 86kg but a mate of mine had a go on the board who is just over 100kg and a good rider and killed it on the board, so all good.

Cool little video , everyone wants to know your weight so they can gauge how it floats you and possibly them.

Hey Piros, yes I understand - was just a tongue in cheek comment :) Would appreciate your thoughts on the thruster versus quad setup on this board, as I don't know enough about which way to go. Mostly surf in small-medium waves at the river mouth near my house. thanks

Basically, for the quad issue:
If you want to turn tighter, use the thruster setup, If you want to get as much speed as possible and hold to steep walls, quad.

This means if you do not know what to choose, go thruster.

Hey Marcel, thanks mate. Really appreciated all the demo's and help from you and the team at Ocean Addicts - very happy to recommend you guys!

Thanks Colas, I will try the quad setup and work it out through experience :)

Im going to have to disagree...
A quad defiantly turns tighter due to the fins being further forwards and also generates more drive with more fin base. A thruster will hold for longer through a turn before releasing due to its rear fin and will also draw out your turns a bit more and keep a consistent feel.

It comes down to personal preference and board shape. I personally prefer the X32's as a quad, especially on the coast here. With their wide outline, the quad really helps generate that extra drive in the not so punchy waves.

More import than fin set-up...Make sure your having heaps of fun and making the most of it!

Source: fortunate enough to surf tonnes of different surfboards and SUP shapes with both fin set-up.

Straddie - which JP was that you were surfing....was it the fusion? I have the 8ft 8 JP surf widebody and it is bang on for me...but have considered a longer surf SUP for when it gets a liitle bigger...maybe the 9ft 6 surf version.

Hey Slab, yes I had the 10"2 Fusion and overall was a good board, but been very happy with the transition to the shorter, looser board. Have not yet had the Hokua in bigger surf (although my ability in bigger stuff may be a limiting factor!) but will certainly post a vid when we get some bigger waves come through. Cheers - Cooper

+1 on that comment especially on short boards like yours. Thruster set all day the new Jackson Close set will be perfect (Shapers Fins)

Forgot to say I am on the 8'3" in the photo above, simply loving this board. I come in at about 85 kg, bit tipi in west coast chop at times but generally no issues
