sue and i took our glides to ballina on weekend for a paddle stayed two days . paddled on richmond river wow never seen so much fish life was mindblowing huge flathead everywhere in 3 feet of crystal clear water . what a great spot to paddle waves in top of river about 500 metres from entrance and new bays to discover everywhere. ps another great thing we were only standups all weekend except a nice old guy george 81 years old came over to us and said its rare to see another standup in area so worth a try
Nice i know a few guys who paddle board down that way and a few are now getting in to the ballina river for the fun little waves that come in there. Great spot!!
It's a great spot. I took my new Naish 14 out there a couple of weeks ago with my 7 year old son on the front of the board as we rode long lefts with no one around. Everyday my son asks me, when are we going on the big yellow board Dad, when Dad, when are we.......

Yep. Best thing I ever did. Couldn't wait any longer. Had to have another in my hands. Really stoked just to have the new board with me. Where the other one went...don't know...have moved on and laughed alot about it. I seem to be the only one laughing though when I tell the story. I kind of hope that the lost board has at least found a home and is being treated with some love.
coming from a sudo-local, if you want to see the sights contact Geoff at 'Byron Stand up paddle Tours" he knows some wonderful spots around the area which he can show you around - has boards and the foods great!!!
If you are planning to do it your self Ballina Island takes around 2 hours solid paddle or 3 hours cruze, put the kids in jackets though with a toggle as I've had some pretty scary moments with the soft mud/sand at low tide....ahhh splash!
Local board hire dude is Noel Graham at 'All Above Board" in Lennox Head, great range of Naish and Emery boards for hire, plus a whole lot of sound advice
