We had a guy pick up his brand new 14ft Naish yesterday right when all the storms where coming over the goldy so he loaded his board on his 4X4 with a board cover we loaned him in case it hailed and headed back to Byron. Just as he crossed tweed river he hit the full force of the storm and it ripped his board and roof rack system of his car and blew it in to the tweed river. Now last i talked to the guy he was still looking for his board so if anyone down the tweed happeds to find it please let me know and i'll pass on his details.

Jeez.. What a bummer.. I can't believe he couldn't find it in the river.. I guess the river must have been flowing strong?

I was coming back from Phillip Island once and our two windsurfing boards plus one surf board lifted off the roof still with the roof racks attached.. It flew through the air and landed on the road behind us.. landing on the roof racks and it slid along the road with no damage.. How lucky was that..

I hope he finds his new board.

Yeah i just spoke to him and he has not found it yet he spent 4hr looking yesterday and is going to hire a boat to look on the river banks today so fingers crossed for him..

It was his first board and was so stoked when he left the shop. If it's still in one peice i'm sure someone will find it and hopefully they are good people and hand it in or look for its owner.

Gee bummer for the poor guy. What sort of roof racks was he using. Soft racks? Hard racks? 4x4 touring racks?

He had a cargo cage on the roof and tied it to that.

Bummer! Gotta admit I didn't feel completely at ease with the factory roof rack on my Mazda Tribute with my 14' sup on top so now use a good quality soft rack as added insurance.

What a bummer!

This is another good reason why we always encourage the use of leg ropes while doing downwinders at sea. A strong gust of wind at sea will have the same effect as this and you will certainly stand a good chance of losing your board if you fall...

When you take novices out on downwinders please stress this to them as we don't want any accidents out there.

Mate that is terrible how sick would you feel watching your BRAND NEW BOARD disappear into the abyss.

Good lesson for us all.

bad news Jacko, will put the word out to the boys around the tweed. tell your mate to check the boat clubs as you get a bit of marine traffic under that bridge - someone might have picked it up and taken it back to the boat ramp/marina

I wonder what a 14ft Naish would cost at "mates rates".

If this board is not found why don't we pass the hat around and put a smile back on this guys face...

If the tide was runninig out when the board went into the drink it would have been sucked out the seaway and then blown onto fingal beach, has he checked with the surf clubs if anything has washed up.

how unlucky is that. still not nice to have a board land on the side of the road but would of been better than losing it all together.

might be worth letting the regular ding repairers know cause there would have to be some damage from the height of that bridge.

Yep the guy has let all Boat Hire places, police, porn shops etc.. know about it but nothing has showen up yet. He even went and hired a tinnie to try and find it.

I felt so sorry for him when he called us just after it happened.

I'd say it's hit the water pretty hard from that height and the wind was crazy!

Roar Industries will help with some $$ aswell. See if it turns up as you never know.

Hi guys. I'm the sod who lost his new Naish 14 into the river off the bridge. Can you believe it!. I stayed up on road level for about 15 minutes looking for the board dodging semi trailers and strong winds. Pretty crazy. It was blowing a gale and raining hard so I couldn't see much. I was actually hoping the board was on the road. Below the river looked grey, very grey. The board was in a silver/ grey colour so I couldn't make it out. Anyway, I dropped a big branch that had fallen down from the wind and threw it in the river to see which way the tide was heading. It was around 5.30 NSW time so the tide was still coming in. But the rain and wind were strong so again I couldn't see a thing! I spent the next 2 hours frantically looking on both sides of the river. For a while I was convinced I could see the board in its cover. I was so excited. I drove to get a higher viewing point and alas it was floating garbage. The wind kept up as did the rain. My next destination was the liquor store.
Anyway...ive spoken to all the boat hire guys and a few others that spent their time on the river and they doubt it would have gone out the mouth but I will contact Fingal tomorrow, cos you never know.
By the way your comments have made my day! Also, as I have learned the hard way, tyr not to drive on a bridge with your boards during a big storm. My tie down system wasn't prepared for the very big gust that hit the car. For this I am an idiot! The worst thing didn't happen. The worst thing would have been the board flying off and hitting a passing car. Thanks again. JB

Hi Bizmanti,

Amazing how the board has virtually vanished - I reckon there are plenty of options as to it's location. The wind was v strong and could have blown in behind mangroves if it did land in the drink.

Anyway, why don't we wait a few days to see if it does turn up...

This forum is a great resource and it costs me nothing to learn and be inspired - more than happy to help out with a fundraising effort...

Small amounts from lots of memebers will get you back on the water asap..

cheers froggo

Don't be so sure it didn't go far.

Ever loose a kiteboard in high wind?

I've helped guys find boards that were 2 miles down the coast. Just when it seemed impossible the board could ever have gone this far, we found it.

I've helped chase down a lot of lost boards. My rule now is always go way farther down wind than you think and I usually find it quicker.
