Spencer I am using On a Mission and Creatures of Liesure at the moment and have had no issues with either brand.
I treat them well and do not wrap them around fins which can weaken them.
Cheers.

Don't buy one yet spencer, there will be plenty of quality sup leashes as spot prizes at the "TassieSUP Winter Classic-State Titles"

After breaking 3 different leashes in as many months I bought 2 of these about 9 months ago - one to use and a spare... the spare hasn't been wet yet.

I highly recommend them.

You will have to explain to the rest of us how you this "do not wrap them around fins" thing is achieved?

Sorry Gizzie, what I mean is when not in use. Lots of surfers of all types wrap their leggies around the tail of the board and across the fins when they leave the water and also when they carry and store their boards.
In my opinion this weakens the legrope at the point that it crosses the fins. I could be wrong with this but I don't do this and I have never broken a leg rope.
Cheers. ET.

Creatures outer reef 10 or 12 foot.

Wrapping the leash around the fins loosely is fine does no damage at all. Leashes are damaged by the back if the fin in a wipeout. Hard to stop that.

I am not going to dispute what you say Hilly, but a few years ago a bunch of us did an experiment with Brocken leggies. Because a couple of guys were having lots of trouble one of the Noosa crew commented that one of the guys who regularly broke his leggies always wrapped it around the end of his board. So we kept a tally and even measured where the leggies broke. Nine times out of ten they snapped at or near where they were wrapped across the fins. Guys who didn't wrap them but took them off didn't record a break.
Seemed reasonable to us at the time so we have continued with no issues.

On the topic of leashes I have heard that ankle type are "safer" as opposed to "knee strap".
Does anyone know what the "safer" is or is it a case of "knee" being out of the way for downwinder, flat water......and "ankle" for surf ...connection point at the farthest point of body. ?????

Or the back of the fin :)

Always wrapped mine surfing 35yrs+ never snapped without reason. Big waves or fin slices.

With my early leashes it was good if they snapped as they were dangerous.

I have just ordered some of the new 10mm Storm Rider leg ropes from Balin. Dogman has been using these and put them through the test at Bells Beach.I haven't tested these but from what the Dog has told me "Unbreakable" I am yet to find a brand which I haven't broken multile times. Hopefully this is the one.

Im currently running Shapers leashes.. I haven't broken one yet.. for my wave board I go a shorter leash (can't stand having to retrieve the board 3m away when trying to get back out) but the 8mm for strength..

Had O&E unbreakable ....but they broke...

Totally agree with this leash recommendation.
Love the way you the leash connections can be unscrewed so you can mix & match with your spare parts collection

I'm having a really good run with leggies at the moment. A couple of FCS leashes which have lasted well on the longboards in solid surf.

have to agree tryed the rest but the 8mm shapers is the only one that hasnt broken yet, has streched a bit,I change mine once a year on a 8ft 7 board
tryed the coil on the surf sup but keep it to the race board only
note the 7mm shapers snaped so 8mm only or bigger and definatly calf not ankle if you have to get through beachies my opinion for what there worth

I sand the edges of my fins to make them smooth and take out the sharp trailing edge or damaged leading edge .. If I neglect to do this, I am reminded when my chords "breaks"

hi guys

i got sent a heap of new leggies from Balin a few months ago

after i tested one of their hand tied 10mm 10ft AKA steel cable leggies..

i got slaughtered at bells and more sooo at big and lumpy as hell wink pop and the leggies were as tough as nails

no leggie comes close to the feeling of "confidence" you have, when your under the pump and need to stay calm

what john and the guys @ balin put these leggies thru to test them was an amazing yet funny story

the new batch of 10mm with swivel attachments came in 6ft 7ft and 8ft lengths

the 6 ft is great but i fall off a lot paddling around and the board always recoils into my head so i use the 7ft and 8ft versions mostly

still waiting to see sights of wear n tear on them

ill keep you posted on how they go

and if you want to check them out call in and see me and the surftech sup circus trailer when I'm rolling around OZ

I have a couple of different brands and types and they all brake on the swiffel.
The standard 7ft FCS did last pretty long with me as well, but the strongest so far is the swiffeless Ocean&Earth the One (wonder when that one goes ).

I know its a bit left field but check this out.

I've been using this on DWers since I snapped my leg at the leggie back in December! Works a treat for me. Used by white water SUPers in the US. Has an energy absorbing break-away mechanism with adjustable tabs to dial-in release tension and a quick release waist belt belt. aStretches to 10'.

agree with the majority of posts here, I never wrap them around fins, and take care of the leash, had my first snap experience in some decent stuff a little while back 200m offshore, peeled off a screamer to feel a pop as my board left my ankle, I was out the back and the board happily doing what it does best, but without me.

I had a new shapers leash, but the leggie didn't snap as such the steel swivel the screws through and holds the cuff to my ankle just popped out, when I eventually made it back to my board, many tiring minutes later, and lost it once more before making the beach finally, I promptly went and brought 2 OAM leashes and love it, had it in some major punishing surf and has passed the test thus far, with the spare still in the boot :)

But would be interested in the Balin, I had one of these with my first board and only pulled from use as the cord that attaches to the leash plug got worn away after a considerable time.

I bought a Balin Super SUP leash (9ft with 10mm cord). Excellent strength, low drag and no snap back like some others I have had. The only negative is that the cord that attaches to the leash plug got worn away in the first few months. This pis sed me off because you spend big bucks on a super doper strong leash and then you find the attachment cord is of inferior quality.

Maybe time to jump in and offer our 2 bobs worth.

Back in about '09 - 10 we noticed our longboard Malibu leashes were starting to be broken by SUPs. This is because Aussie surfers were starting to SUP in real surf. Any leggie will break if you pull it far enough, and that's what was happening. Surface area of the boards affects how much pull you get with whatever weight of water pushing it along. Mostly a standard leggie will do, all the angles are good and the pull is not too extreme, but....one day all the angles will be wrong your board is side-on, the wave is massive, you go one way the board goes another....long stretch and "PING".

We worked with Jeff at www.psups.com.au and dug out some old 10mm PU cord we had lying around and made some hand tied leashes for him. He likes the 9ft ones. Haven't had one come back! and his customers are happy!

Last year invested in some 10mm tooling to apply our unique molding system to replace the hand tied operation. (BTW we pioneered this back in the 80's) We have gradually released the STORM leash. Still haven't had one break as far as we know. Our system allows us to make any length...did some 20 footers for one of our local surfers to take on the hunt for a big wave challenge (Surfboard not SUP) video on our face book page Search - Balin Surfers hardware.

Dog man asked for some shorter versions. Thicker cord ....not so much stretch. Reported no drag problems (even though they look like hose pipe) easier to retrieve. More riders asking for the shorter 7 or 8 footers for this reason but personally I think a bit of length will be stronger and safer for the average user.

Remember these leggies are for serious surfing - enjoy. Thanks to Jeff, DJ, Dog man and all our supporters for helping us.

Oh! for the rope wearing problem. We do not skimp on quality. You have probably got sharp edges on your leash plug - seen it many times before. Get in there with some fine wet and dry paper. Same on the trailing edges of your fins. They can slice any leash.

I just got good use of the one year warranty Balin ( made in Australia I am told) provides as the rope that attaches the tail saver to the end of cord broke. Got a lot of use over 8 months. I can only guess the swivel wore it through as that is the area where it broke. But this is impossible to monitor as swivel is partly hidden in tail saver. The rest of the leash has been very good. 7ft and only stretched an inch or so after quite a pounding. The rope at the other end of tail saver also frayed and I removed it as it became too difficult to get in and out of the plug. This was not from plug wear! The new one I got on warranty does already have a few signs of doing the same after less than a month. Small fibers of the rope separating in small loops, eventually leading to......?

Previously I used Dakine and they only ever broke at the rope at the same point to Balin one, or I changed the parts when I noticed rope wearing as they had interchangeable parts.

As for the " un breakable " brand. I did not snap one but after a single wipeout it stretched and tomb stoned becoming much longer and thinner useless piece of spaghetti. This was repeated when I forgot my sup leash a month or so later on a two to three foot day and a low volume 8'8" sup. Once again did not break!

Thanks John (Balin).. We are lucky to have you contribute here.. and also lucky to have our very own Aussie brand/made leash of such a high quallity.

Thanks for putting in your time and effort into making these supa-dupa strong leashes for us.. Having a leash break has got to be one of the worst feelings that you can get.. Not just for the long swim in or the damage your board might get if there are rocks.. but the feeling that your board might hit someone.. and the harm that that could do to the image of stand up paddling in general.

btw.. My very first half straight and half coiled leash (the yellow one) was the first you made for me and I've used it for years now and it's still like new.

Interesting to read this, I have just come in from a surf in some solid waves at an offshore reef where I snapped a leg rope and had a long swim to retrieve the board.
I am not sure what brand it was, it was my mates board and leggie.

I have always used the 10' Creatures Outer Reef and have never had one fail (I have replaced a couple when I have found nicks in them), so when I finally retrieved the board I went back to the boat and put my Creatures one on and despite a few more heavy wipeout I felt 100% confident in the leg rope.
The Balin Storm leash sounds good but until/unless I break one I will be sticking with the Creatures Outer Reef leash.

P.S. The 9'2 JP felt great, it is a bit more stable to paddle than my 9'2 JL but fairly similar to ride when on a wave.
