It was a Squid. Interestingly it was the cable casing that snapped on the ankle side. Dont want to put their leashes down though as it has had some heavy tugs in the past and has survived. Having said that my outer reef is twice as old and still going strong.
Hi Spence, in my opinion the most important thing is taking it off after every surf and washing it. Like any other synthetic, salt water will cause minor corrosiveness. My current leg rope an 8ft Dakine has no nicks and seems to be in perfect condition after a year. That's probably because I never fall in LOL. ( I spend more time in the water than on the board. It is without doubt the best leg rope I've ever had. Every year they get better and better. Used to know Clarkey (Peter and Ashley) who started Full Bore ( Do they still exist as a company?). Things have come a long way since the mid 70's!!
i keep breaking where the leash joins with the ankle fitting , it was only a few months old ? I think it might have something to do with technique but its hard to think about that when your being dragged ...
After breaking several creatures outer reef I've started using the Balin storm rider. These definitely feel superior to anything else I've used and haven't had a break after 6 months use. The 10mm thickness on these leashes compared to the 8mm with most others makes all the difference. For safety's sake I'd suggest to anyone entering the surf with a sup to use one of these leashes.
The XM leashes from the US are good and retail around $25 each. I stretched a 9ft 8mm leggie to at least 15ft recently. i felt like a scumbag not buying local, though I don't understand why leashes/leggies in oz are twice the price as the states.
I just ordered 2 Stormriders from Balin and they were very helpful. I don't mind the odd swim after the board but just not when the waves were almost double overheads ....
