Legion get a sup and shut up.

I couldn't care less if someone uses the term 'Waterman' it doesn't bother me a bit, if you want to use it go ahead. 'Waterman' doesn't mean Laird Hamilton in another language or is reserved for him and only him so p**s off with that crap attitude.

I liked the original article (scroll up 30 angry posts), nice one. The world is toppers full of w***ers who'll drop in, snake, dish out stink eye etc.. so long as the majority of us who actually have etiquette remind the ex mal riders and shortboarders who switch to sup oh and kooks of etiquette then we'll all be fine.

There is no pecking order. The sea is free for every body to use.

I wish I lived where you live . In the big city there's always been a pecking order. Even down south as a kid there was a pecking order (even when semi-empty). It's not Soviet Russia out there, it's dog-eat-dog (sorry doggie). I fully recognise the pecking order and my place in it, whether at the bottom or the top, and I don't try to step outside those boundaries. It would just make trouble.

BTW I'm also a bit tired of he "Aloha spirit" thing and all the neo-Hawaiian "guardian of the ocean" lord-of-the-ringsy stuff that gets said. It's surfing for ****'s sake. It's grown men playing with floaty pool toys.
I laugh, especially on American-centric forums, when everyone peppers their posts with "mahalo"s and "aloha"s. Reminds me of the Icy Hot Stuntaz.

Not happening unless I get old(er) and fat(er) or injured or greedy(-ier) (did I throw enough stereotypes in there?).

It's just so pretentious. Reminds me of in high school there was this guy called "Mouse" because he looked a bit like a mouse. He decided he wanted a cooler name, so he decided his new nickname was "Mullman" and announced it to everyone. Well, he was called "Mullman" for a while, accompanied by uncontrollable laughter.

From now on, you can all call me a "Legendary Tubemeister", because I Surf, and so does Kelly, and he's been called a "Legendary Tubemeister" (so I was told, a friend of my cousin's girlfriend's sister saw it once on some crappy website), so therefore I should be a "Legendary Tubemeister" too.

I have no idea how well you do or dont surf, we all think were kelly till we see video of ourselves.

Hey, I'm a kook. But I can take off deep and I don't blow many waves and I make the most of them. I can hustle with the better surfers in this crappy city.

From your text:
it's so easy to pick up that it enables people to do what used to take many years of very steep learning curve.

I love the view you guys have that SUP is so easy!

I don't think I could paddle straight out on a short one and rip. I do think I could spend a month (maybe less) on one and have it absolutely wired.

I base my opinions on peoples' posts etc. I see people in threads on forums like this who never surfed before, never did anything on the water and are catching waves relatively easily. I realise that SUP is in its infancy, but I read things like national (?) titles, where guys are winning who've only been doing it for a few years, if that. Granted they generally have another background. I see videos etc where guys are catching waves easily when they have limited board riding ability.

OK, it's not all like that. In one of your threads (the recent one with pics of your daughter), there were some pictures of Jacko (?) doing some nice turns. In fact, I was going to post in that thread but it's not my place to criticise - one of my biggest annoyances with SUP is how you all use the paddle as a pivot instead of drawing out the turns properly. You get into all these positions where without the paddle to hold you up you'd be falling off. You can see it by the extreme bend in the shaft. It'd be nice if people learned to draw their turns properly instead of relying on the paddle to catch them or to do the turn for them. Then, the paddle could be used to enhance what was already a nice turn. If I were you, I'd encourage my daughter to realise that while she's still learning. Jacko's (?) pics were a nice place to start. I guess to develop that skill you'd need to surf the wave without letting the paddle touch the water at all for a (long) while. That's just MHO, not sure if it's relevant to SUP.

I can even believe the dribble that is comeing out of your mouth Legion..

Most of us were short board surfers at one stage but once you jump on a SUP there is no turning back.. Espessly in a place like perth where you can make the most of the extremely poor conditions.. How can you comment on something you have no idea about..

Get on an 8.10 SUP or similer or for that matter even a 10ft SUP once you shred on it then come back to this forum and post how easy it is..

Until then f##k off back to your short board forum..

I say this with the greatest respect for forum rules and the like.

Have no problem with you having your own opinion but even you said you have to respect the "subgroup" you are in and know your own ability.

Right now in this "subgroup" ie SUP forum, you are the kook (kook in the sense that you have never ridden a SUP) in a group of relative Kelly Slaters (in the sense that we have all riden SUP's).

So according to your theory we can paddle past you, drop in and , wait for it, "comment as we like" on your posts and you have to deal with it. If I went to the kite forum and started dishing out mountains of advice on something I have never tried I would expect the same treatment.

Just get the bigger picture on what you are saying that is all.

This post made more sense in my head than it did on screen

Wikipedia definition:

"In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion"

Sounds pretty fitting to me.

I think you have been given a pretty fair run on this forum... if you went on to a lot of forums and called their pastime sh1te nearly every post you would have had a post like supbelly's a lot earlier. Give it a rest mate.

Actually, this interests me a lot (the stuff I posted before). I see the paddle used as a crutch in a lot of photos/videos (i.e. for the purpose of pivoting and balancing and leaning rather than using the board and the rail and your body). After that post I went and looked up the old thread I was talking about and yeah, it was Jacko and yeah, he still leans on the paddle but in each photo he was nicely balanced and centred over his board and using the paddle to help his turns/manouevres, not using the paddle to make his turns/manouevres.

Am I wrong? Should the paddle be instrumental in making the board turn? Should it play more of a part than position, weight transferance, body torque, etc?

I try not to post off-topic stuff (i.e. it's all SUP related). I try not to post extraneous stuff (unless it's stream-of-consciousness, but it's still SUP related). I might post inflammatory stuff, but only because it's not what you all want to hear. If you don't like my posts don't read them. I'm not a troll in the basest sense, i.e. I don't post random political, porn, gore, etc stuff.

I think your missing the fact that it isnt easy.. Jacko has been as far as i know SUPing for years and is really good at it... I never said you were wrong, i just think you should really do something before telling other how to do it..

I had a young guy (20s) ask me for a go of my 8'9" the other day - he was genuine - so I said no probs. He was a kilo lighter than me and over 20 years younger (and a good surfer to boot) but couldn't even kneel for any length of time let alone stand.

My point is, that I would love to see these smart arses who claim how easy it is to give it a crack. Most of the guys who get good fairly quickly (at the surfing side) come from a strong surfing background and have 'paid their dues' already.
