Loco are you taking a Sub to G land ? On a small day it would be sick on a Sub.

A good mate of mine Camel was the supervisor there in the mid to late 90s , had some mind blowing sessions in between visitors to himself

Legion I can still see where your coming from and agree with you on most things except ONE , you have not tried a quality Sub Every surfer should have a Sub in his quiver

I have no idea how well you do or dont surf, we all think were kelly till we see video of ourselves.

Hey, I'm a kook. But I can take off deep and I don't blow many waves and I make the most of them. I can hustle with the better surfers in this crappy city.

From your text:
it's so easy to pick up that it enables people to do what used to take many years of very steep learning curve.

I love the view you guys have that SUP is so easy!

I don't think I could paddle straight out on a short one and rip. I do think I could spend a month (maybe less) on one and have it absolutely wired.

I base my opinions on peoples' posts etc. I see people in threads on forums like this who never surfed before, never did anything on the water and are catching waves relatively easily. I realise that SUP is in its infancy, but I read things like national (?) titles, where guys are winning who've only been doing it for a few years, if that. Granted they generally have another background. I see videos etc where guys are catching waves easily when they have limited board riding ability.

OK, it's not all like that. In one of your threads (the recent one with pics of your daughter), there were some pictures of Jacko (?) doing some nice turns. In fact, I was going to post in that thread but it's not my place to criticise - one of my biggest annoyances with SUP is how you all use the paddle as a pivot instead of drawing out the turns properly. You get into all these positions where without the paddle to hold you up you'd be falling off. You can see it by the extreme bend in the shaft. It'd be nice if people learned to draw their turns properly instead of relying on the paddle to catch them or to do the turn for them. Then, the paddle could be used to enhance what was already a nice turn. If I were you, I'd encourage my daughter to realise that while she's still learning. Jacko's (?) pics were a nice place to start. I guess to develop that skill you'd need to surf the wave without letting the paddle touch the water at all for a (long) while. That's just MHO, not sure if it's relevant to SUP.

Have you tried a short board SUP?

Nah, not happening, not interested.

hi, a good sup surfer uses the paddle to crank the first bit of the turn, then it's back to pure surfing technique.it's about getting as much grunt/leverage, out of the first bit of the turn as possible, well that what i'm aiming for
cheers

This would have to be one of the most uninteresting threads that ever walked the earth.

Four freakn pages of BAAAAAAARF

please die.

Just to put this friendship sh!t to bed I will have to disagree with you Oliver

I reckon good on Doggie and Legion for having a go.

I can understand why though it is really slow over on the shortboard forum

I reckon they are closet supers though especially now Occy is in to it.

Ill Bite on this one.
Thats why its called PADDLE SURFING. In my opinion, its a different sport/discipline.
if you want to position yourself with turns like a short board, ride a short board. If you want to turn a board like a mal ride a mal. If you want to use a paddle to draw a different line on a board ride a SUP.
If you dont like watching Stand up Paddle surfing, dont watch it. Its the same for me watching a Kook in 1' surf. doesnt intrest me. Horses for courses.

You're totally right. I'm completely selfish. Surfing is inherently selfish. There's no room to share on the waves I like to surf (maybe there is on fat mushburgers, I don't really like to surf those). No ego involved though. I just like the way surfing feels, for me. Don't want anyone watching, don't want anyone participating. The only time I welcome company is if I'm alone, it's a sketchy break and my mind's thinking about sharks.

I find it hard to believe that the whole SUP community has a different view. In general, most surfers seem to share a similar view to me (discounting the mid-morning mal crew who go out just to have a chat in the water and don't actually surf). At least from everything I've ever read or heard. The epic sessions are always those with "just you and a mate (or two)", not those with 100 strangers at a single peak.

Do all SUPers honestly prefer to share waves with friends and strangers? Wow.

Good on you Stu for posting the article. Good read and I think it is pretty ordinary that some have flamed you for it.

Legion, kind of think you have missed the whole point of the surfing, SUPing whatever you do out there. Yeh crowds are a pain and great sessions are those with a few mates, great waves but such is life. There are other people in the world besides you. Traditionally it is the agro crowd haters, that wreck the vibe in the surf. Maybe SUPers and surfers who dont mind sharing waves when the conditions are right, have realised that the world really does not revolve around themselves.

Think about this...aloha

"whatever" is a good response mate. it you hate crowds try rock climbing or stamp collecting...vibe, mood or atmosphere. Whatever you call it, agro, crowd haters ruin it for everyone else. From the grommets just learning to the old dogs who have surfed the spot for 40 years, and everyone in between, crowd haters need to get over themselves.
I am not saying I like crowds whether there on SUP, mal or booger but I deal with it because I choose to surf with them.

I actually do rockclimbing as cross training to surfing, I get my waves in crowds and have surfed ultra crowded spots Bali ect, I dont have a problem getting waves the use of 'the vibe' & 'aloha' are a bit average as far as Im concerned. But you get your kicks the way you want mr morgan.

Yeah for sure Loco, much easier traveling with maybe a 7 0 " as your biggest board , and a couple of other small boards as well.

Yep Camel sure is a character, I rode one of his quads he gave me that he shaped a 6 6" for about 9 months whilst he was over G land , I started to love that board and really mastered it when he got back from G land he wanted it back and a I never saw it again I was devoed
