hi all, i am quite new to the game and already a little obsessed......i have surfed since i was very young and have taken to the stand up quite well.....the issue is, i have tried several boards but i want some opinions. i am 80 kilo, 6'2, and i want a stand up board that is good for surfing and only ok for flat water..... i dont plan on exchanging normal surfing purely for stand up, but i will use it considerabley... i'd like something that paddles/ ballances quite well but is not too bad to manouvre and catch waves on...i would love to know opinions on what board would suit and why..
cheers

A Naish 9'5" Mana would be a good choice.... Just because..

Anything with 3 or 4 fins, some deck grip and a leg rope.
I reckon if you pick something with these things you are well on track

Too slow Greenie..

Check the specs of the 9'5" Mana and then check the other brands for a similar size board.. Just in case you don't like yellow.. .. and demo first if you can.

hi, a sup ping only for some time and then getting back to 'normal surfing', i come around to thinking that if you like to do both, leave the sup board a bit sizey so the two forms are seperate. i believe it's harder to swap from a small sup to a surfboard than a bigger sup. just imo
cheers

yeah cheers....you know this was my initial plan and i agree... but after doing some stand up paddle for a bit on a whopper and another ten footer thats not quite as fat as the whopper, i'd kinda like to find a happy medium between not too big and not too small you know...

no, that's cool. i meant small as in sub 9'. a nice 9'6 or around that size or a bit bigger maybe. plenty of performing boards around at those sizes. psh do some nice boards in that range
cheers

Probably too corky. I ride a 9'8x30 at 150L and it has a nice pin tail
But theres a reason why I dont usually post in these kinda threads. I leave it to the pimps
Starboard, Naish or PSH and you cant go wrong.

I haven't demo'd one yet, but you may want to try a 9.0 Mana if you still want a bit of volume, but something that will perform well.

I'm not pushing Naish (I ride a DC in the surf...at the present), but my son has a 9. 5 Mana and I think it handles very well in the waves for it's volume. I've ridden it in 1 - 6 foot and it's a fun board. So long as you get your weight back a bit, it turns really well. From what I have seen, I think the 9.0 Mana will be a bit of a step up from the 9.5.

If you come from a strong surfing background and want something to grow into, then I wouldn't go longer than 9.6. So demo as much as you can.

Yep - cant argue with that logic

+ 1.

The board does have a massive amount of volume buts its not a barge - it hides the volume well and actually sits down really nicely in the water and doesn't have the corky feel that other high volume boards have. It is incredibly stable and surfs unreal. It has a really nice amount of rocker also so it turns on a dime and you really can't nosedive one in the surf. Good simple, fun, light and well made board.

If you've been surfing for quite a while you probably are used to talking to a shaper and getting customs.

Stand Up boards are no different. Talk to a shaper, get what you want, not what someone on a forum buffed by someone else to recommend their boards or in a flashy catalogue tells you is this years best board.

Most of the custom shapers of repute are years ahead in performance of production, just like the R+D departments of the big brands that are making customs for their team to test. Why should pro team riders be the only people that get to speak to a shaper??? You can also and while the price is similar the value is much greater.

No doubts that many of the team riders for the big brands rip on production boards also but just like pro shortboarders at their level in my opinion they could be getting the most from their boards by continual refinement and working closely with a shaper. They're good now, they would be even better if they were able to refine their equipment to a higher degree.

Most of the guys that recommend boards on this forum are ex windsurfers or Kite boarders that have been sold catalogue buying for over 25 years when their industry lost custom production.

Disc: I work within the surfboard manufacturing industry and would like to see it exist for years to come.
