my 8'6 step rail is so good. it has that surf through the rail shortboard feel. but i'm gonna need a bigger board to handle all the variations in conditions that come with medium/bigger waves. i'm talking say 4,5 foot alley/gm. the board still needs to surf really well.
i don't wont to get into mini gun type boards. to be honest i'm not a big wave type of guy, prefer waves that i can still work over with moves. i was thinking of say a 9'2 version of the 8'6. any other ideas- custom or manufactured
cheers

Custom all the way Lacey. IMHO I reckon the popouts are designed to appeal to a broad market and have way too much voume in the rails.

8'10" to 9'0" x 27 1/2 x 4 1/4 with super low volume rails, tail and nose. Narrow tail area and a touch more rocker. Keep the volume around 100 litres.

While this might sound gunny, I reckon SUPS are on the whole, are way too wide in the tail for high performance surfing.

I had the same thought pattern a while back. I was considering going smaller than my 9'3 Woody. At times I think the 9'3 is too big and I would like to be a bit looser, at other times I wish it was bigger because put plainly the waves are crud. It is a very light, low railed, narrow tailed board with extra hard round tail. It's a blown up shortboard.

My own conclusion was basically that getting a much smaller board than this 9'3 would mean two things: 1/ That I would need to also have another board for when the waves were small and very weak and 2/ That the smaller board would only really work in good waves when for conditions like this I would rather be on a shortboard.

From a lot of the comments I read on this and other forums the limitations of smaller SUP are that you lose a lot of the benefits you enjoyed when you first started on bigger boards. I'm just gonna sit tight for now.

Why can't you have a flatter rockered smaller SUP for weak/small waves?

The only benifits you lose relate to paddling IMO. I know people talk about glide, but SUPs paddle so well anyways compared to a SB and even the sub 9 footers can generally out paddle a mal.

Also, on topic, Lacey is talking about a SUP for slightly larger better quality waves.

I think Laceys board he has now would work better in good waves than it does in poop. I thought he was talking about 4-5 feet alley waves when it is kind of bumpy and fat and more rangey. Perhaps that's why he's not looking at something gunny.

What do I know but anyway, I haven't even ridden my surf SUP for at least 3 or 4 months.

Oh, I assumed he meant decent waves.

I reckon Casso's new stick would go awesome in the smaller stuff as well.

i'm thinking mainly when there is some bump, wind, strong currents running out of the creek which can go go sideways down laceys or going back towards the rocks and the backwash that comes off the southside off the breakwater. cop some of that backwash or side chop, the 8'6 stepper disappears under the water

so i suppose it more about handling the conditions, not about the 8'6 not handling the waves

something that's not going to wear one out before you even get a wave.

i reckon the oc1 has helped my balance. because you use your hips to lift the ama or to keep it in the water, that transfers to using your hips more to balance the tricky small sups i believe

still if you like to see some one fall in the water for no real reason while more or less just standing around waiting -watch me

wouldnt of thought you would need something to big , i was out sat arvo when the northerly kicked in , real choppy side wash ect and my 9'2 handled it pretty good.I think in those conditions we do get when its a decent size at the alley a bit of weight in the board helps.I think thats why my old hand glassed board was so good in those conditions.

Bit wider, bit longer, bit more volume. Maybe step rails add to the instablity - don't know never tried them.

Question, I know you are heckling but why do some of you guys think 2-3 foot is max size for SUPs to surf Currumbin?

Cant answer that , its great on a sup when it gets big , usually plenty of room as the outside bank starts breaking.I think its the paddle out that can get very tough expecially when a big sweep is on.

yeah the step rail take the volume off out there, but boy they surf good.

some guys grab their shortie for anything any bigger. last year we had 4,5,6 foot regularly- party time on the sups

me personally, i'm not going to fight it out for a wave on a shortie on the point breaks. spent a lot of years doing that

I agree, the thinner rails are definately the go.

One of the most fun surfs I have ever had up there was that day when Jacko, yourself and Casso were out. Heaps more fun than any short board surf I have had up there. The sweeps on the goldy points make them ideal for SUPs I reckon.

You wipe out and your board is towing you in towards the beach... Not a nice feeling personally.
The 2-3ft is what I prefer personally as it's good fun. I would link my above comment to the 3-4ft size though, it is challenging for me, anything above 4ft and I'll happilly watch from the beach

you know i had heaps of none sup crew coming up to me for weeks later raving about what they were seeing from sups in half decent waves that day. it was one of those days when everybody on all boards were lumped together.

i should have been easy to spot- yellow board, high rotation, took as many waves as i could get, io-ed a few blokes off, paddled right through the middle of the pack.didn't worry about any rules and had a good time of it- boy i had fun. shame really- they were all shortboarders, couldn't find a mal to snake anywhere

yeah, the gate keepers need a real shake up alright
