i'll explain myself. i basically did shortboard sup for 2 and a half years, every day if not twice a day. getting boards shorter, more pulled in and refined on each board. the last board was a step rail 8'6 under a 100 litres. now the step rail is really good, but you don't get a lot of support/ stability outside of the very centre of the board. while the board surfed insane, i found myself prone paddling out of rips and swirls, after 3 days in a row i got too sore from holding me and the board upright and no matter how good a sup is, it's no shortboard.

the last day i surfed it i had some nice alley wide waves ,jm and myself were the only sups out so that was groovvvvy.

last wave in was my best, got the hollowest wave of the day.

thing is i got to the car and realized i was over it.

so i just stuck to the bigger sup boards for a while.
i did some shortboard surfing but had a terrible time of it.

anyway i had a few shortboard sessions over chrissy which was better, but kept paddling and surfing the big boys and was having fun again.

about a month ago i decided to get on the shortie again, remember it now about 4 months off the shortboard sups except for one go on a suplove. i was thinking to myself this is going to be very interesting not, but it was like i had never stopped short boarding- flow trim speed was instantly there. i was shocked(in a good way)

i've got this theory that shortboard sup ing is this weird mutant surf style all of its own where the big boards you have to have the basics right to surf them otherwise you just fall off and i'm finding this is really good for surfing shorties like it was when i started sup ping on an 11 footer rh.

so presently i'm happy surf ing12'6 s or 14' ers or bigger if i feel like it in small or fat of onshore rubbish and only surf the shortie in clean waves, no crowds, no point surfing. every time i surf the sb again it feels insane. such a buzz effortlessly flying around, so i can't see myself getting a shortboard sup any time soon.
you would also be surprised at what you can do on this big suckers if you keep at it, look at noels surfing on the 12'6 fanatic. i've never been a longerboarder so i'm no stylemaster, but i'm getting to the stage where i can pump the bigun down the line shortboard style. funny watching guys faces when i do that. fading and then cranking out a big bottom turn is a special feeling too

i'm not anti shortboard sup, just lost interest in it for the time being. i suppose if the alley wasn't there things might be different
cheers

ps i must add the last couple of years have been the time of my life ocean and surfing wise

If I lived up there I probably wouldn't surf full stop - it seems like its either small and crap or when there's waves the points are choccas. So I can see how SUP would be not that enjoyable - you're either hassling with a million crew or riding puss.

When we used to holiday up that way I used to go to Sth Straddie a lot or surf the closeouts on Main beach.

So Lacey I reckon it depends a lot on where you live as to what is the best option for surf a lot of the time. Sydney might not have the insane quality of say Snapper, etc but we get a lot of clean waves and for 6 months of the year - bigger stuff with very few people (if you are organised and don't mind early starts).

When the waves are less than ideal I reckon you can't beat a high performance light weight SUP for having fun - it might be a bit 'mutant' but that is half the appeal for mine. And big waves are where SUP really comes into it's own as the playing field is that much bigger.

Great post though

nah, i'm pretty safe when rumor has it that 'BC' has now got a 12'6

haha rumors are like that......if your refering to "bingo" he hasnt. He has paddled one ONCE! funny how the guy can paddle something and BAM! its on the internet rumor mill

BTW his go to board is a 7.3........his words were: try pulling into a 7 foot Samoa'n reef break on your 12.6

pretty funny. i was out one day in some medium sized 4 foot junk and he said to me- your suppose to going smaller not bigger. i always take great delight in reminding him he used to tell me small sups are a waste of time

youve hit the nail on the head, but for us that dont SB or LB and want to ride shorter hp Sup's its just a matter of thinking about the conditons and where best will suit, taking into account where the crews will be and trying to find another spot. From stradie to Nth NSW there is always a wave of somesort.

I agree with Goatie and Dan (dtm) - but in the end it's about getting out there and enjoying yourself. It's going to be easier to do that if you don't routinely have to battle with a zillion others in the water...and your range of choice on where to go where it may be a little less crowded.

I'm about to head off to South Australia later this week and where I expect to spend most of my time I will be surprised if there is anyone else in the water, at least mid-week. Just me and the white pointers lol. I'm currently wondering whether to take a short board in addition to a couple of (surf) SUP's. I probably will, but then, you know, I reckon I'm going to spend all my time on a SUP - whether its big or small surf. Why? Well, over the last 12 months, I just find that I have more fun on them and I end up getting three times the number of waves. Maybe, if there is absolutely no crowd factor, I'll end up with all three boards on the beach and just alternate between them.

Will be sticking with the short surf sup boards,
my deal is living over an hour from the surf but can paddle flat water near home on the river for the fitness, so when I get to the waves once a week instead of being knackered in the first 30 minutes prone surfing can paddle around on the sup for a few hours, catch some waves and the trip down in the car is more worthwhile,
you guys living on the coast are lucky buggers,
maybe get there one day.

Mate totaly agree after seeing that effort that you and roscoe go through to get to the waves wow great stuff unreal! really made me realise how lucky i am to live so close to the beach.
but then again if we got waves like you lucky buggers i would be in paradise!
anyone who travels more than 60mins to surf is a legend in my book

Good topic and great call.

A couple of us took our 14' DW boards as back up to our short wave board SUPs to a not-quite-working surf break yesterday and thank god we did. The short boards were useless in the barely breaking 2-3' bumps. But the big boards were a blast. Luckily all the mal riders overslept the change from daylight savings as I would have made a mess of a line up if anyone else was out there. As Phil says, when things go south, they go south quick.

But back on topic, must get myself a 12'6 surf race / BOP board.

Yes Woody, that's what you need, more boards! So when am I coming round to help remodel the SUP Shack???
