you turn up at the beach but the off shore wind is a little too strong for stand up,the only equipment you have with you is your SUB,would any of you guys surf the paddleboard conventionally (prone) or not bother? I think i would just so ive not wasted the journey.

Eddie would go ...... so would I.

Personally, in situations like this, I wrap the tie down straps around the board and buckle me in, and go goat boating on my SUP .......

For me SUP is the backup sport that you can do if the weather is no good for anything else. The only time I would not go out on the SUP is if the conditions were life threatening.

I'm looking forward to going out on a SUP in 40+ knot onshore wind blown slop. I think it would be a hoot lie-down paddling and bashing about in the waves. The only worry is carrying a SUP in 40 knot winds.

I went out on Saturday down at Inverloch, I reckon it was blowing 35 knot with driving sleet and rain. I paddled out to one of the sandbanks and spent around 2 hours fishing - it was the worst conditions I've been out in. I wasn't able to stand up to get to my destination as the chop was horid, carrying the board was a major challenge and I almost lost all my fishing gear in the drink on the way over. Not really sure why I did it, the water was brown, foamy and stunk of rotting seaweed - I've never seen the water this dirty here before. I AM SO SICK OF WINTER IN MELBOURNE RIGHT NOW - I'm looking at flights to the GC for my ULI and I right now.

Despite the poor conditions I caught two really good fish so it was almost worth it. However, I don't know if it was the sausage roll when I got back to shore or the outing which made my day.

The way I see it is that I only get one weekend per week so I tend to make the most of it.

A mate and I paddled out from Sandringham on Saturday for a few hundred metres dead into a 15-20 knot SW. We got a good workout and once we reached our turnaround point we sat for a rest. It was lovely in the sun and we were warm from the exertion.

I learned a few things with my GPS. I could standup paddle at 2.5kph, kneeling raised the speed to 3.5-4kph and I got up to 5 kph lying down. Kneeling is less tiring than lying down. When we stopped for a breather we barely drifted at all sitting on our boards.

On the way in there were some biggish swells coming through but there was no way we could catch them. We got more speed from the tailwind.

I am much fitter than my mate but he is much stronger than me. I can paddle longer but he can paddle much faster. Strength counts.
