maybe it is just me and my newbie lack of skills, but as soon as it hits +5kts and it gets a bit bumpy, i find it impossible to make any headway or even stand.. and huey the cruel task master, no matter which end of the beach i decide to start from always always makes my return leg into a head wind..

am i doing something wrong or do you guys have any tips for paddling into the wind

I think you are best paddling directly into the wind. Just slog away at it and you will make progress. I always try to start out paddling into the wind - it usually makes the return trip so much easier. After time you will get used to the bumps. Loosen your legs up and let them flow with the chop, after a while it just becomes second nature.
