with the likes of ex pro surfers into it and the quicksilver executives suping it all looks good for a financial future,i tried to explain that to an ex world champ that rips on sup,he doesn't quite believe it.i reckon it will be way bigger than longboarding pro events.start training your kids

IMHO, don't shoot me
Shortboarding 1
Longboarding 2
Sup'ing 3

To attacked big bucks you need corporate backing from the
giants, who always support the masses, therefore its simply
a numbers game the more that participate the more money
will be involved which attracts more numbers. 1 + 1 = $$$$

Longboarding has been unsuccessful IMO,with a world tour,
a little like the female tour who only have half the events
the men's tour has scheduled. To be world champion in any
sport you must play againist the best and in this case surf
the best waves on the planet!

I hope it does get big enough in the future, but if its anything like the Longboard Tour,it would be second rate!
F1 v's Bumper cars
But having said that, the first step is in place with SUPSA, once ALL states are on board,we could start state team comps, select a national team and take on the world [}:)]

I agree K9 is more than capable,Guy's such as Luke Egan,Tom Carrol,Joel Tudor come to mind as Champion surfers in their own right. If such people were involved in setting up a sup world tour(SUPAWT),it would progress faster.
Luke- connected with Billabong
Tom - connected with Quicksilver
Joel - connected with Theocean

I know that in Vicco a semi pro SUP circuit is being established!

Having been in the states in Feb this year, you have no idea how huge it has grown just in California alone.

I believe that due to the nature of the sport people in short boarding and long boarding are already being drawn to the darkside not just for fun but also cross training.

The flat water scene is getting bigger every day and this will be where significant growth will be purely for fitness!

This is also a sport the whole family can do, I can see my wife short board or long board but on the 13th June I bet she will have a go at SUP!

My prediction:

Short boarding 1
Sup easily 2 within 2yrs
Longboarding 3

Corporations will pour money into SUP due to its marketing ability the demographic is 8 to 80 its simply a numbers game!

IMHO Longboarding needs to go back to its roots and should not be shortboarding on a longer board. I watch guys like Lee Considine, Bave Boyd, Murf, and Peter Bray down our way rip beautiful drop knee turns, cross step and then purch on the nose with grace that even impresses the local short boarders. That to me is real longboarding and I would pay to watch it and I dream about doing it with that level of skill! Longboarding does not have a big enough differentiator from shortboarding anymore!

phil,my sentiment exactly,as an old longboarder i reckon the whole longboard thing got lost with performance comp surfing, the roots are gone,it should be judged on traditional style, single fin and judges that know how to call it.
sup surf on the other hand has the wow factor with the crowd, just watch the spectators at noosa, during the sup event the crowd watched with great interest, when the longboarding came back on they filtered off leaving friends and family watching with half interest, big corporations in the surf industry with have to put in to sup or loose out,in hawaii,at longboard events they get more sup starters than longboarders.
a world tour is on the waysay no more

Hmmm, I haven't seen SUP in a Coke ad yet. Haven't hit the big time till you have been in a Coke ad.

In saying that, the thing that probably held the longboard revival back is being seen as shortboarding's poor cousin. I doubt it is about the moves the guys are pulling or anything to do with that, it is more to do with the fact that the manufacturers and suppliers are all pretty much the same, so less $$$ to go around once the short board guys have got thier cut.

Windsurfing has managed to run a world championship for number of years with what seems like a small sport (although it is much larger in Eurpoe than here). A lot of that has to do with the fact that the main players in the sport aren't always sharing money with other competeing sports...that is changing however with many Windsurf companies doing Kite and SUP lines.

What also needs to be remembered is, just cause they aren't a houshold name there are many sports that have world champions. I could not tell you the name of the Bobyboard world champ, but I am sure there is one...And I certainly couldn't tell the name of the Ping Pong world champ, but there is probably one of those too. The sport doesn't need to huge to have that title, so then the question is...how big do you want it to be?

All that needs to happen is for someone to get it together and get some sport specific companies to support it...it can and will grow from there, and will be on a Coke ad before you know it.

The thing about surfing competitions is that they are really an advertising mechanism to sell clothes and sunglasses. They are a symbol.

The vast majority of consumers of those products don't surf and don't know anything about surfing. They see the symbollic representation of surfing and think that looks cool so they (we) buy the stuff.

Adding new disciplines of surfing just confuses the general public and distracts them from the business at hand ... buying T-shirts and sunglasses.

That's why SUP will never be truly huge, along with longboarding and goatboating and kiteboarding and everything else. There's no reason for it to exist outside of the people doing it ... and we're just a drop in the bucket.

Lately a big trend among water sports enthusiasts, and our favorite celebrities, is stand up paddle surfing (SUP). So much so that even the lovely (and smart) Jennifer Aniston has taken to the sport.

Maybe it's because it's fun, but I'm sure she also likes it because SUP is a phenomenal workout. SUP is basically where you stand on a surf board (or kayak) and paddle. If requires a good deal of balance, but it's not about catching waves. SUP can be done on totally flat water and since you are standing up, you are able to get a much better view of what is going on in and out of the water. Being that it is all about balance, SUP basically works every muscle in your body. Not only are you working your legs, but you're also working your arms and core. You'll be improving your fast-twitch muscles (crucial for balance and reaction time), which makes SUP a great cross-training workout since almost all sports/exercises rely on balance and core strength. Plus since you'll probably be falling off a bunch in the beginning, you'll be getting a good workout pulling yourself back onto the board. SUP fans regularly claim that just thirty minutes will work your body much harder than several hours of surfing
