I have a few surfing related sites bookmarked. Everything from this site (love the graphs) to Swellnet, Coastalwatch, a few how to sites and a world atlas of surf spots.

Is it cheating to use these sites. Sometimes I think so. It used to be that if you wanted to go for a surf you would chuck the board in the car and cruise the coast. I still do this as I think that half the fun is the anticipation and going through the process. If it turns out that the surf is rubbish, at least you tried.

Sometimes though it is nice to sit back and check out how the surf is in other locations.
One of my favourite is www.wannasurf.com/ You wouldn't believe some of the places that have surf and you can spend way too many hours on this site.

I do feel a bit guilty because sites like this are exposing more surf spots to people who haven't put in the effort to explore.

What do you think? Am I an evil person just for highlighting these sites?

They've saved me a lot of wasted petrol, so I guess I like them.

As per obct - I use them all. I tend to use them everyday whilst I am at work, checking how things are shaping up for the next time I get a chance to go...

And you can waste a lot of time heading somewhere for a surf only to find the tide or banks are RS, or (in WA) the bloody Southerly is in early despite the forecast ESE... these days I don't have the time I used to have, so I use all of these sites to help me make a descision on where I head to.

I also use them to plan holiday destinations - and when the time comes I have the forthcoming week of tides, wind and swell plotted. Gives me a heads up on the best days for a surf, and the days when it's time to spend with the family...

Not cheating at all.only cheating if your being paid by someone to work instead of viewing cams. As the others say, saves time ,money and if your stuck in the office you know if your missed anything.
I log onto all the sites daily and if the surf is crap, I feel better, but when its on and I am at work I just say to myself ( why am I here )

I really enjoy logging onto overseas web cams like Hawaii and Bali when its peak season.

Another thing I really like doing is going to google earth and studying coastlines when someone mentions some obscure far away place.

I’ll never get to go to those places so google earth is a good consolation prize.

Plus I always seem to find other non surfing features that spark my interest.
