My mate just brought a new 8-Ball model Mc Tavish longboard. It surfs unreal and he is over the moon with it except that it has a Made in Thailand sticker on the board. What we are wondering is is this a hand-made board or is this some computer model, not that it matters, cause he's in love with it. It was just a big shock!

Your mates MacT is from the main factory in Thailand where they produce a large range of Molded or if you like pop outs of all different sorts of boards. The manufacturing company is called Cobra, here's a link to their factory, I assume all the pics and the story are fair dinkum.

http://www.composite-marine.com/images/review/CobraStrikesOut.pdf

Mactavish is just one of many well know shapers throughout the world who provide Master Plans of their most popular shapes to SurfTech who then have Cobra produce them under the general brand name of TufLit.

Other shapers that allow their designs and names to be used read like a who's who of surfing for the last 50 years. I don't know what their cut of the action is but it must be pretty good because in reality, these boards could normally be sold just as cheaply as all the other no name brands that come out of the same factory using pretty much the same manufacturing methods.

obct is on the money... Where did he buy the board from? You can buy an Aussie made Mc Tavish for a couple hundred $ more... apparently it surfs exactly the same, not that I'm talking from experience. Love to get my hands on a no name one!!

Order a customer from the factory ( Byron Bay) or your local shop.
I alway's order custom and play with the Razer outline and also
the Fireball and I enjoy wacking some artwork on them aswell.
A sample of my Quiver order custom problem solved

Hey mate - tell ya buddy not to stress - yes it is a thai made mc tavish and there will never be anything quite like a byron made McT BUT rest assured the g.s.i eightball is an insane board and although it may not have the same blood sweat and tears in it that the boys in byron have put into their local boards your mate will have many many years of fun on his board. I give you this advice from my very close experiance with this brand and these boards - if anything get your mate to let as many people as he can try the 8 ball and you will be suprised how many of them will want one - AND AS GOOD AS THE GSI ONES ARE - THE BYRON ONES ARE EVEN BETTER.

Hey 62Mac, Just wondering what percentage of SUP to longboard do you do? Since I have been SUPing (3 months) I haven't used the minimal once. Maybe when the novelty wears off a bit I will find that I will get back into prone surfing. Or will I???????

Well, I started on a 11.4 Naish,I wanted something to do when either the wind is up or no swell.I paddled the thing hard and fast for a month without riding my longboards. Then I wanted to surf the thing and traded it for a PSH 10.6,got right into it for another month just to learn and be happy with my performance. I started to miss logging so I went back to it and have not used my sup in two months. Sup'ing was always going to be a second love.

have an ausssie made mctavish fireball 9'1 and find that it works better with a 3 fin thruter set up. i.e no move than 5 inch centre fin. traditional longboards are DEFIANTLY different to pop out and OS (ordinary ****) mass produced fbreglass boards. at the eof year found i had some money left over and broght an outsckool single fin 9'6 local shaper board. i have found that this suits my stlye of surfing and small waves which we have had for weeks. off the rack $750. my surfing improved on the Mac because i caught more waves but to be LOCAL and have what is now surfing history (maybe one of this shapers last baords) One of the my surfing mates sees me take on on 8 foot face and can sea a face plant but step back no stall freighttrain take off made it. on mac it would have been ugly. find a local shaper who can be your best freind and surf with a smile on your face.

Blasphemer - your penance is playing a Ukulele for 5 min.

All boards deserve to be waxed with a soft hand, ridden like you stole her (with in reason - can't leave scaring) and scraped with a sharp comb.

Hang a board on a wall for viewing pff, no board desirves that kind of treatment.

I'm tone deaf.

Oh wait; sorry I forgot, it's a Ukulele, being tone deaf is an advantage.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know if the term "Bagpipe tuning" is an oxymoron or a contradiction in terms?

Mate it was great, it made my day. I took Bob into my office and had a brief chat and introduced him to the forum which he had heard of and showed him a picture of my quiver Bob kindly signed something for me in true Bob style What a great humble guy he is, btw I did invite him to jump in one day and post in this section,Look forward to that.

Now I do get the odd high profile model , rock star [}:)]and footy players in my store every few weeks but, I was like a bloody kid when Bob rocked in, made my day for sure.

Man you won't believe what happened to me, I did get it wet, but not for long , I did my groin (from a footy injury) on my second wave... I'm hoping to be back on board in a couple of weeks, but I think I'm being hopeful, see what the doc says on Wednesday

Couple guys I know went to the maldives a couple years back forgot to tie the boards to the roof of the car coming home from the airport, all brand
new sticks (6) they bought just before they went.

Better luck in 2 weeks mate.
