I think the abc news got their reporting schedule in the wrong order this evening. First story was about the antics of the Canberra clown circus , the unfortunate second story broke the news of Ricky Pontings decision to retire.

Like many aussies I have lived through the golden age of australian cricket of which Ponting was an integral part.

My overriding memory will be of the 2005 Sydney test match vs Pakistan. I had bought tickets in the O'Reilly stand for my dad and I. Sitting at mid wicket witnessing Pontings signature pull shot for a full day as he compiled a century in the company with my dad I will always remember, my dad passed away shortly after.

He is a team man to the end though, by announcing his decision to retire the day before his last test, which is the deciding test in the series and will leave one team or the other as world champions, he gives the team the ultimate motivation to succeed and leave him a winner to the end.

Good on yer Ricky, thanks mate.

Always lifted the Aussie team to new heights, which he set himself, one of our greatest captains if not the greatest IMO.

A magic player who will be sadly missed but hopefully will continue on to be still great inspiration.
