In light of the great thread that Mr Goddard is running on the new board and the craftsmanship and skill that goes into shaping a new board for us...thought this article was relevant and interesting.

Unfortunately it seems to be a challenge faced by all types of industries whether you are a tinned beetroot or peanut butter producer (like Dick Smith for those that missed the reference..).

Moral of the story seems to be - keep going for the cheap non-local product and one day (maybe not tomorrow but one day) you may not be able to source a new board (or beetroot) locally.

Yep.....I have just read the article now and was thinking of you!! I thought this quote summed it nicely but sadly

"Now I earn more money than I've ever earned in a low skilled job doing less work than I've ever done."

Anyone else thought about the mines?

Good point mate - lots comes down to where the mine is & how long the swing is.... very hard on the partner left behind when there's kids in the family.
Bit easier if you're single

There's pretty good reasons why Perth and WA has the highest divorce rates in the country.

I heard something like 9 out of 10 divorces are FIFO related.

CMC, this says that QLD, Tas, and SA have the highest rates of divorce. Then Vic, WA, and NSW. NT was the winner. ACT rate was not quoted.

But I don't doubt that FIFO is a contributor. But only a small slice does the FIFO work.

Mate of mine runs a crane in the Kimberly - the amount of coin the mines throw at people is insane. Told me about the safety officers figure I'm in with a shot.

Don't come around here correcting me with out of date information Wrongondo.

I wonder what the current rate is since the boom really heated up. I'm sure since 2009 all states are higher with mortgage stress etc.

Have a brother who has worked fly in fly out for about 30 years . Been on huge , and I mean huge money for at least 20 years . Is divorced , doesn't talk to any of his kids , recently bankrupted and drinks shiploads of alcohol ( not that that is necessarily a bad thing ) .

But he loves his job , works week on week off ( I think ) now , so works a week then goes fishing for a week , loves it .

I think the age old problem of;
a) there's always some bloke who is sick of shagging her, and vice versa;
...is more of an issue than;
b) FIFO

2010 data... nothing conclusive...

Doesn't surprise me that Qld has a higher rate than most. I know 3 or 4 that broke up over winter. Funnily enough though one of the partners at least moved straight in with another...

Missus said she'd glady move out west and clean the house if I brought in that kinda coin.

From the few OHS officers I've meet I didn't realize there was a test.
