Yesterday I saw first hand the good and the bad in people.

The Good: After chatting with a fellow breezer he was kind enough to gift me some surfing gear when he could well took some money for it. I thought how nice are people they are so kind and giving still.

The Bad: As I am on cloud nine thinking of how good people are some bastard broke into my car and took my work bag, with my laptop, work diary, ipod and a bunch of other stuff. I have since realised I had taken all of out baby pictures from 0-12 months off my wifes iphone and backed them up on my laptop. They were erased from my wifes phone so unless their is some magical way of retrieving them they are gone forever. I haven't told her yet as its just so upsetting.

WTF is wrong with people, I would give that crook $2000 just to get those photos back. Funny thing is computer is locked and they don't have the charger so they wont be able to use it.

You need to install PREY - can run it on your laptop and phone - it will take pictures of the people when they first open / turn the device on once you activate it and send back to you. I know that it may not help you now McHenry - but after recently suffering a phone loss in our household we went looking for a better solution than Find My iPhone - and Prey came up tops. Now we have installed it on every device we own.

We watched Roses's phone travel from a national park in Tassie to 5 addresses in Western Sydney and could do nothing about it. So frustrating.

I hope you get your stuff back. Our loss was annoying but not on the scale of yours by a long shot. Thoughts are with you.

I used to work in newspapers and we would have jumped on a story like this. "Lovely couple say please give our baby pics back"... it would be worth giving the local paper a call and see if they can spread the word via a heart-wrenching pic story. The thief might even see it and have the decency to do the right thing... (doubtful, I know, but hey, I have known some crims who weren't all bad.)
Good luck, McH.

Sorry to hear that McHenry, I hope you are able to retrieve them mate. It is a good idea to somehow get the word out there about the photo's in the hope of appealing to someones better nature.

The idea of backing up data of any kind is that there is one copy on a not so safe device such as a computer or phone prone to going walkabout or suffering from some kinda virus or unwanted crypto locking. And another copy should be backed up to an external hard drive which remains in a safe place like your home. In the case of special data such as photos. Backing up the backup is a good idea. I always buy the largest external hard drive on the market when it reaches what I consider bang for buck. Like the seagate 5TB I bought from JBHIFI a few months ago. I then backup all my most valuable data to it like photos/video (raw & edited) & continue using it. So I currently have about 6 backup's on external hard drives. The only data on my PC's is the programs that run on it.

That doesn't help you now mate I know, saying it more for other people really. I was a PC techie for 9 years & sentimental personal data loss is very common...hope ya get it back & if not. Hope your friend's, family & missus facebook account at least amount to allowing for some retrieval of your kids first year of pics.

Car was parked in my driveway. They had a look in the shed but didnt want the tools or the motorcycle in pieces in the shed.

Ahh just so gutted. I get over most things quickly but I am very dark on this.

McHenry, bummed to hear about getting you gear stolen.
Check out Dropbox for storing your pictures from differnt devices, it's free and they seem to give you more storage space the more you use it.
