Asahi Super Dry was my number one Japanese beer at first coz the big azz novelty 500ml cans are so widely available in vending machines across the country. I prefer it in kegs though, probably coz it comes out colder than the vending machines or the 7 eleven shelves.
Really like Sapporo beers in Japan. I bought a carton when it was on special here which was brewed by Coopers which I though would be a good omen. I didn't enjoy it. It was a few years ago, maybe a bad batch. Just seemed way way full flavoured & very different to the Japanese version. Sapporo have a few extra Sapporo types available on Hokaido that are really good. Its always been cold & snowing when I've been there for snowboarding a few times. Which probably makes a difference, full flavoured beers are better on colder days I think.
My favourite non craft Japanese beer is Suntory, The Premium Malts. Really nice balanced flavour & you seem to be able to have a decent session drinking it without having a massive hangover the next day like a lot of Japanese beers tend to give you.
At home though, after Coopers Pale Ale have continued to break my max price policy of charging over $50, I've been drinking a new beer since April. Its a surprisingly good cheap beer called "Hammer 'n Tongs, Bitter" by "Freeman. The cans are only 330ml, but you get a 30 can block for $38 instead of a 24 stubbie carton for $57.
So yeah enjoying the HammerNTongs along with a couple of Ports & Shiraz thrown into the mix. Hadn't had Port since I was about 21 & thought I'd try it again for something different this winter. Had to ask the shop if they stocked it coz they're now called Tawny. Same kinda deal like with champaign & sparkling.
