Interesting read on how some longboarders give us all a bad name. Forget the legal discussion in this article, but I believe there is a time and place for everything!

A guy paddled out at a spot, i was that was out of the way, small break that i had to myself and two kids. Also another learner who i encouraged back out into the water. Three more turn up and one didn't have a leggy.. I was wary with my kids and he was very nice and super careful but he would be swimming all the time..Really didn't see the point as he was definitely no KS

It just seems plain stupid..Bit like rooting with out franger in a aids camp

legropes by law ... unless you're the only one out & that'd be like 2 halley's comets in one day

Yeah she nearly took me out twice, & had to pull back off a number of waves as she was belly boarding her way down the wave in front of me with no idea what a drop in even is, more his fault than hers though, he'd know better.

I think it was a well written article - thanks for posting. Some of the comments are right on point, some are stupid and some are down right scary.....I think that leg-ropes should be used if there is any chance of hitting someone else.....whenever I see young hipsters on their short boards trying to be cool with out a legrope I mention it to them. I have also been known to grab their board and fling it on to the whitewash to insure it gets all the way to the beach so the owner does not have far to go to get a legrope. They tend tog et the idea then. All the old boys up my way on their Mals use them so no need.

Interesting that the article was based on an event at Manly. We had a couple of touring surfers from Manly at our local break recently. Both riding longboards without leggies. Sure enough one ended up on the rocks.

if only i could surf like you Ted i wouldn't need one!!

legropes came in when i was a grommet the first one i owned was the black rubber tubing with an internal tether (surf aids brand )
great for dragging small grommets a long distance under water and then slingshoting back at your head ,still preferable to a swim, and should be mandatory at any (crowded) break ..............unless i forget mine !!

yes I seem to recall that incident......but alas there was no one out so it was fine! I just dis-agree with the people who choose to not wear them when there is a lot of people round. Its the same with my attitude to drink driving....I am happy for people to drink and drive if it on their own roads / farms etc but when there is chance that you may ruin someone else's day / week / month / life and they have no say in it then I have no time for it.

Would have to agree. No one out, 1 foot, no leggie. Crowded, or even just a few, 1 foot, wear a leggie.
I had to eskimo roll under a mal going sideways, a few months ago, at a reasonably crowded local point break. Fortunately, it missed my board and even better, my fin ended up buried two inches into the rail. Justice!!!! I still gave him a gob full.
