Hey fellow Seabreezers, I've just knocked up a short portrait documentary (3 minutes) on a timber board builder who teaches people how to build their own boards from scratch. I'd be keen to hear what you guys think of it..

If you're interested in building a board, you can build whatever your dream board is in his workshop, or you can do it from your own shed interstate or overseas and he can send you frames, some materials, and instruction. He does the whole thing from harvesting the trees himself (fast growing, very sustainable if you're so inclined to ask). The workshop mentors you through the process, whether you've never picked up a tool before or you're a cabinet maker, barely surf, you shred, or you never will. Hopefully some of you are interested in learning to build a timber board, it's an epic skill for life.Anyway, I hope you like the video and get a bit of inspiration from it! Feel free to share it if you know someone who you think would like the video or would like to build a boardIf you're interested, the website is www.bodhitreesurf.com.au Shakas

Their workshop is based in Perth, but they send frames and tutorials to people all around the world. A fair few people get theirs sent to them to do at home, though if you can get time in the workshop then it's a pretty epic place to work and be mentored in.

One of my mates makes and rides his own timber boards. These look amazing and I'd love to get one made but with the cost of materials and amount of labour that goes into them they cost a fortune. He assures me that one board will last a lifetime though.

I'd be keen to try my hand at 'constructing' a board.

When my current quiver is found lacking and there's nothing commercial that grabs my interest, I may indulge.

How durable is the construction of these boards in real world terms?

Pre glassing, I can snap a foam core with a bit of effort, whereas pre glassing I couldn't snap a well designed timber board unless I really laid into it. So once they're both glassed, I imagine the timber board would still be stronger. They definitely feel like it. His timber boards end up being as lightweight as my high performance ones. Bodhi Tree Surfboards designs the boards to last a lifetime really, rather than a throwaway foam and glass. Retire it into an heirloom if you do ever manage to drive over it

Nice, that's the way to do it! DIY Yiew! The costs all depend on how you do it. Bodhi Tree Surfboards building course takes essentially 6 days scattered whenever suits you, and by the end of it you'll have learnt how to go build your own boards, and you'll have your first finished wooden board. The cost is barely greater than other boards when you consider the cost of tuition that's included. It costs $1250 for you to learn to build any board up to 8 ft. It's an extra $500 if you want him to glass it for you. If you want to build anything upward of a 9 footer then it'll cost $1500 to build and $550 to glass. Though there are other glassers around or you can try it yourself if you're confident.

At the end of the day, you walk away with a one of a kind quality timber board that you built yourself, and the skills to do it again, for not far off the cost of a factory board that you'll throw away in three years time..
