Just wondering what's the go with malaria at these land camps in the Mentawais? When we went there I was told its one of the main causes of death with Surfaid working hard to fix the problem. It was ok on the boat as the mozzies don't go out to sea but the jungle was still full of them so I was just wondering how bad the problem really is?

They recomend that you take the tablets with you but not take them?? I dont get it, but the tablets are sposed to make you sick as well, so I dont really no. They have all the mozzie nets ect and have a specific time when everybody puts repellant on ect so to me it looks like prevention is way better then cure. Also you actually have to have a malaria carrier on the island as the mozzies dont live long so the need to bite sumone with it b4 you can get it, I think thats how it works, Im no expert or doctor or english student looking at my spelling

Hey Doggie, I am also goin to the Mentawai's in Sept. First day aboard the good ship Tengirri will be the 25th and hope to have 12 days of the best waves of my life. This will be my first trip to the Ments and will be taking a 6'4", 6'8" and a 3rd board that i have'nt decided on yet. Would also be keen to hear from anybody thats been and what boards worked best over there? Keep an eye out for the Tengirri as i'm sure it will pass through the Wavepark area, say hello, i'll be the tall skinny bastard on the wrong side of 40 hopefully not gettin smashed. Hoppy.

Kearnsy right. I just got back from the Mentawais, surfed for 10 days straight upto 7hrs a day, my ribs got rubbed raw and turned into ulcers from being in the water so much. Same thing happened to my knees from the tail pad. I'd recommend ripping off your tail pads and/or putting some elastoplas over the areas where you expected to get chaffed (knees and ribs).

On malaria, if I was staying at the camp I would take the malaria pills. I didn't take them cause I was on a boat but the few times we went to shore we did see some. Apparently Malaria can last for years. There is a bonus to taking the malaria tablets (doxycycline), they can prevent infection from reef cuts.

The Malaria parasite can only be carried in higher primates, including humans. No other animals can act as resevoirs for the disease.
Malaria is a serious problem in the Mentawai Islands in POPULATED AREAS. THERE IS NO MALARIA in areas that have no population of parasite carriers.
The Anopheles Sundacious mosquito, which is the only disease vector able to carry and transfer the parasite, is capable of flying over 3 kilometres through open areas to reach a possible meal.
Guests on charter boats anchored near densely populated villages are more at risk of contracting malaria than land-based guests living in areas with no resevoirs of disease.
At WPM we stock malaria test kits on hand, provided in conjunction with Surf-Aid, as well as Malarone, Larium, Mefloquine, Quinine and Chloroquine. In 10 years of operation, we have had to test and evacuate one guest (2007) for contracting malaria while on the island. A total of 5 guests have reported having contracted malaria, 2 of which visited other malarial regions before or after coming to our resort.
We also have a speedboat on standby for medical emergencies including sickness or injury. During optimal weather, we can reach the mainland Sumatra (85 nautical miles) in 5 hours. This is faster than 98% of charter boats in the Mentawais.
Malaria DOES exist on mainland Sumatra, Bali and Java. There is a risk of contracting the disease wherever you go (or with whomever you book your vacation) in Indonesia.
WPM has floor and ceiling fans so mosquitoes have increased difficulty landing on our guests. We also light mosquito coils every night and provide Permethrin dipped mosquito nets for your comfortable and safe sleep. Mosquitoes that touch these nets (or happen to make it inside) die shortly thereafter.

What the'f does it do you when you touch it or while your in it then? But I guess pick the lesser of 2 evils?

(having said that I'm ignorant as to what Permethrin is.)
