I just got back from my first indo experience - a week surfing in Lombok - whilst I was there there was a guy taking photos of surfers and selling the pics to them.

He didn't get any good ones of me so I said no thank you, but since then I've loved the idea of getting some good pics (vain I know!)

I'm heading back in just over a months time and would really like to get a picture of me surfing as I've never had a good picture that's not of me miles away as a little dot in a sea of dots.

What's a fair price to pay for photos - I don't want to be ripped off but equally don't want to offend or act like an a**hole.Would really appreciate some input from more experienced surfers

A "good" price is what you are prepared to pay......the shots are digital so the photographer can delete easy but a deleted picture is worth nuthin so bargain / barter...more you buy cheaper they get.....$5 for one seems to be the usual starting price then you can get a whole heap for around $20 good quality
My avatar is from Lombok, got 5 for a coupla bintangs but I have surfed with the photog many times.....got a whole heap another time, me and a few mates-good shots- for combined $30 about 50 good photos

It really depends on where you are and what the competition is like. If you have some good camera gear yourself you are better off to just employ someone to take pics of yourself with your gear. Again depending where you are you might get them for $10 a day plus food upwards. With their own gear probably costs you $30 for a session or two. There was an Italian a few years back at Roti selling shots for $50 each - no competition and he was cleaning up. If you go to Ulu's there are loads of people taking your shots and you can bargain pretty good. If you are in a poor area average wages might be $80 a month - in Bali closer to minimum $250 a month. So location plays a big part of what you can pay. Also just talk to people around the area and find out what they paid.

I paid $20 each for a couple of pics of me doing airs on a sailboard at main reef in Lano.
There was a bloke about 10 years ago who used to run outdoorshots bussines in WA.
The pics were top quality, worth every penny...would even pay $50 each if he asked.
I did the large prints, framed and put 'em on the wall.

Paid $150 USD in the Ments for high quality photos over a couple of weeks and down to $10 AUD in Bali.

I never used to worry about photos but regret it now since I started getting photos it brings back so many waves I have forgotten about that were just gold.

No photos....it never happened

Also I reckon depends how good the wave and photo is?

Flicking it off the top on a two footer is not worth as much as you standing in the barrell on the wave of your life..

There's no 'fair' price to pay, especially considering our sport is global. I got dozens of photos from a guy shooting from the cliffs at Chicama only because he realised that I really only wanted to relieve him of the quality shots and not just take everything in bulk. He ended up taking what I offered because I went through all the photos of me and took exactly what I wanted. He just wanted to get rid of me. Take the time to bargain hard for exactly what you want when surfing abroad and you'll often get what can be perceived as value for money.
