Hi, I'm currently searching for a compatible mast to use with the Hyperglide Olympic 9.0
I will certainly not race on exclusive Iqfoil gear, since olympics are like 20 years past my body due date

But around here, being a small race foil community (15 sailors) there are about 8 broken masts (apex) at least in the last year.

So looking at specs, it seems the sevenrne HGO needs a:

530
32 IMCS
Constant curve (I did not find this data, but I guess they're constant, right?)

Patrik mast, being 520 and 33 IMCS seems like a good choice
Because we have a dealer around (not many choices)

Anyone using Patrik Race 100% Carbon Race Masts?
How are they regarding durability?

I'm using patrik masts in my HG 4s. They rig and work perfectly. Had to file out 3mm from the back of each cam though as the patrik mast is bigger diameter than the apex. A lot of patrik gear here in WA and havnt heard of any breakage problems.

Glad to hear there are Slake users for that purpose, I may end up doing that except for sanctioned IQ events when I am ready

I have been rigging my HGO 9.5 on a Simmer SX8 and it works fine.

Nature of our sport things will break, had two slake masts both 18 months old 400RDM and 430MDM both snapped just above the boom. The 400RDM probably was due couple high speed crashes fatigue probably caught up with the mast, the 430MDM a bit of a mystery as was hardly used and no crashes but snapped in the same place, as they say S**t happens. I thought it was interesting that MauiSails now wraps the outside of all bottom sections of their masts with kevlar (so I think that covers the area you mentioned that broke on the Slakes), figured it was for wave sail masts which take a beating in Maui waves (and what I bought), but turns out they do it for all their masts including the 100% carbon race sail masts.

While this may not be directly comparable, it is relevant I think. The hull of the kayak I bought is made of a layer of carbon fiber and kevlar, it has had many impacts, but hull always rebounds to original shape with no cracks. Know a guy with the same kayak made in just carbon fiber, he got pushed onto the beach by a wave and the hull caved-in in one area. Wonder if that kayak had been made with carbon and a layer of kevlar, if it would of rebounded to the original shape like mine has. Like the MauiSails masts, the kevlar layer on my kayak is on the outside covering/protecting the carbon fiber.

the kevlar layer adds no structural integrity to the mast, only provides protection against chafing e.g. from the boom head. leave it rigged in the sun under high load, and it will break; let it take a beating in the shore break, and it will break.

I think kevlar ties the carbon fibers together into a bundle that will not fracture as easily, and also absorbs some of the direct impact protecting the carbon fibers underneath.

Kinda like what a board nose protector does to protect the board from mast impacts.

Or imagine you made a foot long 1" diameter rod by overlapping, and glueing together, maybe a thousand tooth pics. If you then tried to bend the tooth pic rod it would bend some before cracking, but if you wrapped it in a layer of kevlar and then tried to bend the rod the kevlar layer would allow the rod to bend farther without the tooth pics breaking.

Get a slake, the difference in how easy it is to pop the sail/cambers alone makes it worth it IMO.

Just take note that I've had 2 severne RDM extensions (which you will need with a Slake mast) break on me, with the pulleys being ripped out of their plastic moulds, each lasting about 2 months. I switched to a Duotone XT, and haven't had any issues since then.

You may have to add a camber spacer here and there to get that tight luff sleeve profile.

yes the MDM ist available in 430 cm.
unfortunatelly no RDM by Slake.

yes, officially the 430 MDM is not on the Internet page visible - but if you ask Brett for it - you will get it.

I have used Slake SDM masts on Avanti Machine M7 sails - but the MDM only on dedicated foil sails.

Reg. MDM mast you have to pick up the best suitable version - i prefer medium base and soft tip (77 kg and 1,72 cm) for Patrik Foil+ and S2.

The MDM's are a bit thicker than my RDM's - depends of the type of camber I guess.
