Hi there looking to find a board around 130 liters, good through chop and is not to technical to sail,at present I sail a AHD 116 liter and have a Bic tecno 152 liter.I only use the Bic when there is light wind so I use an 8 metre sail which is still good fun although getting a bit old.Looking at reviews there are numerous boards that would suit but I have 4 in mind.Isonic,Tabou Rocket,F2 Stoke orFanatic Falcon or possibly Starboard Carve. The reason I am looking at about 130 is because I sometimes sail on a gusty freshwater lake where the AHD will not make it through the lulls in the wind.I am 80 kgs.I also do not want to have to buy specific race sails and masts as I use only Ezzy Infinitys.Any advice welcome.

Hi nbr. I only recently purchased a Fanatic Eagle 126 and while I have only taken it out a few times I'm very impressed with it so far. I did a lot of research on 120-130 litre freeride boards before purchasing mine but in all tests the Sharks, Hawks and Eagles did very well. I think from memory the Shark gets up onto the plan a lot quicker than the Eagle or Hawk so would probably be better through the lulls. I am also 80kg. I use Ezzy Freerides, a 6 metre and soon to be a 7.5.

The 'cross boards seem good (Fanatic - Exocet), also Starboard Aero carries well through the lulls, planes early, and being fairly short (but wide) easily manoevreable.

IMHO - I think the 130litre board is still to close to the 116. I'm not sure of the range(width) of your 116AHD.
I have 2 Exocets, a cross117 and a Speed slider77(135l) and its to close. Out of the two, I now find myself only sailing the C117 as it planes easily. Therefore have little use for the SS77 except for the lightest of winds. The C117 can hold up to a 8.0m but I only go as big as a 7.5(Ezzy inf.) with it, and its enough to get planing at around 12-15kts. BTW I am also 80kg.
I have an 8.5M to use with the SS77, it does hold the plane easily though, so maybe an Exocet SCross 140 would be a better choice and give you a touch more float on fresh water. That combo would definately give you more time on the water.

Test one up at Caloundra..

I see they are on special at the moment.

Cross Isonic and Falcon off you're list. There is no point getting a dedicated slalom board if you are not going to use a dedicated race sail, they are also more fragile than any of the cross boards and more demanding through the chop. Many don't plane as early as cross boards either.

My picks are:

Starboard S-type: take you're pick the 126 or 137 would probably replace both of you're current boards.

Tabou Rocket 125

Starboard Carve 133: also good but not quite as fast as s-type but less demanding also. (However slightly shorter length of the s-type 137 would make it behave a bit better and "feel" like there is more volume).

Exocet Scross 120: 8m is as big a sail as this board can take though and it's probably a little small.

The F2 stoke is quite demanding to ride, especially through chop. You might like to consider fins also; the starboards and exocet are all tuttle box, the tabou is powerbox.

Thanks every one for the info I am leaning towards a Tabou Rocket or possibly an exocet[had the chance to demo one last xmas but no wind]The Ahd is fine but the new board is really to replace the Bic for lighter winds and lake sailing, something a bit more comfortable, manouverable and a little more top speed.

We should be getting a Rocket up here shortly for demo if you are keen to try give us a bell. Got the latest Matrix sails in stock from 4.5 to 7.5, also GTX 9.3. Will have them at gearswap for demo this Saturday.

Hey Padi, would love a go but as I live up in Townsville I have never had a demo of anything.Looking at the latest British windsurf mag they seemed to be a bit critical of the Tabou's top end speed ,is this only on the 140 because it is the only model unchanged or is this just because other boards have started to come up to the legendary Tabou speed.

gday NBR

I have had the tabou rocket 69 ( 125litre ) for just over a year and it is hell of a good board with smooth rides and great to gybe !

I have used it in winds from 10 - 30 knots and i love it. how ever just remember it is a wider board so not as suitable in the larger chop but you will have some fun !

It is damm fast and smooth at high speeds !
There is a review in the gear review forum if you like to read it about the tabou rocket !!!

I use a 46 cm fin on it most times and it gets up and boogeys !!!
any more info i can help you with it just drop me a message

Cheers

hi,
i have a hypersonic 105 & have found it rides through the lulls well and handles chop well. There's some new 2005 133L hypersonics for $999 available from starboard dealers, i'd think they would have a fairly similar ride. Check auswind.com.au for details. They are not for every one but should suit gusty conditions well

NBR, So many boards outs there hey, to many bloody options.
I recommend you try before you buy, I know that might be hard up there but if you’re spending a couple of grand I recommend it. You wouldn’t think there could be so much diff in boards but there is.
If you’re looking for a non-tech board look at a cross board something like the scross or something similar.
If you ever down in brizzy happy to give you ago of my gear.

Read this today - the best were - Starboard Carve, Mistral Screamer and JP X-cite ride all on par with speed control and early planning, with the JP just the best in their opion.

not much mention here on Mistral, Im 115kgs and have a mistral screamer 128 (07). its fantastic from light to moderate winds (upto 20-22knts) I run a 48cm slalom fin and upto a 8.8 cambered sail. (NS Match race) its a perfect setup but in big chop and wind its not so brilliant, would need to go down to a smaller board then anyway. Give them a go if you get a chance. very good board.
