I'm off to Byron next week for 5 days and am wondering if I should take the windsurfing kit? The SUP's will be packed but I'm not sure if Byron gets a NE or Southerly?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Thanks

In a Southerly try Flat Rock just north of Balina. It's got an awesome point break in big Southerly.
In a North Easter you can sail from the Gap in Byron. Although the NEer never seems to get really that strong here.
You can also try Lennox Head in a Norther Easter. The wind seems to be generally bit better there.

Rule of thumb will be... If you take no windsurf kit it will crank for 5 days straight... if you take windsurf kit there will be no wind... at least that's my experience.

Once the NEer really kicks in surfing in Byron itself is a pretty messy affair otherwise it's a pretty sweet setup assuming there is some swell around.

Agree with above. At this time of year you are still more likely to get a NE sea Breeze, but SE winds are also becoming more prevelent too from now till autumn.

Anything from the south head to flat rock...........long fun waves.......Any north, sail about midway up the beach at Lennox. I have tried to sail a NE at byron many times, but have never had consistency - the NE is dead onshore and has always been "holey' and gusty. If you have big gear this may not be a problem. If you want to sail at Byron, if the swell is small you can take off anywhere and tack out, or take the easy way out and launch from "The Pass". Hope you get some wind.

don't know where I got "the Gap" from... of course it's "the Pass".

Also, while it won't happen this time of the year Byron can be pretty good fun when there is a low or the Northern NSW coast. A few years back I was up there for a weekend between jobs in Brisbane when a big low formed. Friday night was rainy and stormy... followed by Saturday and Sunday with 30-40 knts NEer and 4 meter seas all the while having clear blue skies. Lennoxhead was breaking about a kilometre out to sea. It would have been pretty awesome to sail from the PASS. I watched a couple of kiters having a ball... sadly I had no gear with me.
