After a good swim back to shore today I would recommend that if you havent looked at your uni joint for a while it might just pay to!!!!

You can tie the excess downhaul around the remaining UJ and sail back.

You need to sail with your foot against the bottom of the sail to stop it bouncing around, otherwise it'll punch holes in the deck.. Better than swimming.

or buy a base with webbing or cord as a failsafe - that saved me from a similiar swim once

Agreed - same happened to me a couple of months ago - boge snapped, planed in half-powered up (as a precaution), changed over to my spare & enjoyed the rest of my session...

...now last week when the wind dropped from 25kts to 5kts in less than minutes & I was on my sinker about 500m out, that's a swim that I couldn't avoid.
