First time ever today I broke a harness line. Just sailing along and snap, the stainless steel rectangle of my 28" Gaastra lines just exploded. I thought "stainless steel" was supposed to be that. Doesnt bloody corrode in salt water
Checked the other bits and they are all brown with rust.
Broken masts, battens, and sails you deal with but something that pissy seems a little OTT.
Anyone else had the same problem??

Bought my wife a bike a few xmases ago, after a few months spoke began to break, you guessed it rusty stainless. Bloke in the bike shop said there was a very bad batch of chinese stainless, had small chunks of raw steel in it, these rusted and bingo, another busted spoke. I ended up replacing the whole lot.

304 is the common grade of stainless that will corrode, 316 is marine grade.
In my experience all china steel even in mild steel grades is crap.

I have broken 4 harness hooks this season...2 x dakine, 2 x Pryde.
I think it is fair to say that quality has dropped this year...

not to worry mines worst the downhaul tack rollers were starting to rust after only 3mos. thing flew past my ear as it snapped imagine if it was head on i'd be downhauled to put it nicelyyeah Kimba's right you never know what grade they use nowadays..i wish if sails were pricey might as well make them real sturdy

check your stainless bits with a magnet. you might be suprised to find how little nickel and chrome they are using

Ever notice how knives rust in the dishwasher when forks and spoons don't?
They use a different grade of SS for knives more suited to cutting implements. There are always trade-offs and the SS with the best corrosion resistance may not have the correct mechanical properties to suit particular applications, although if it corrodes it doesn't matter how strong it WAS!

Some grades of Stainless are magnetic, check your kitchen sink, 400 series, same as knives etc. I have also seen 300 series become magnetic after welding when it's theoretically impossible, can't explain that one

There are hundreds of grades of Stainless Steels designed for specific purposes, unfortunately we have to use the best one closest to our needs, not always perfect however.
If you were prepared to pay for quality you could have it unfortunately no-one is, so manufacturers have to find the cheapest option.

Actually at the moment there is a material that costs the same as 316L (used to be double) but is 40% stronger & more corrosion resistant, only it's harder to work with.

BTW a lot of the corrosion is not the actual material rusting but the surface has been contaminated while manufacturing and they don't passivate (acid clean) to remove it.

China is getting better with their materials although the Oil & Gas industry still won't accept materials from most of Asia, no exceptions!

Broke a Prolimit near the hook after 13 months - the type that have a small catch and that goes into the main body of the hook - steel sort of bent and then broke thru with a mighty big crash - scares the crappers out of ya when one minute your loaded up and blasting along full speed - next thing your flying across the water gear everywhere going WTF just happened.

The new Dakine has a little rust mark near the hook as well - can you put fish oil based primer on them to protect them?
